The Argentinians have done the same regarding the Falklands. It’s a strange thing for a bunch of footballers to chant after just winning one of the biggest games of their careers.
I much prefer Three Lions.
The boundaries of the referendum were the boundaries of the piece of land. I.e. the people who will be affected.Gibraltar is a legacy from the British Empire when we wanted naval control of the entrance to the Med and a stop off port on the way to Africa and beyond. When navies made you a world power it was always useful if we wanted to be a Global player.
Today it does look a bit of an oddity - a little bit of Britain stuck on the southern tip of Spain. The validity of a Referendum is defined by who is allowed to vote particularly where the boundaries are drawn. The same of course could be said for the Spanish cities in North Africa.
Charles and the hole in the wallI used to live in Gibraltar.
People like getting up in armsI think some people are being a bit precious tbh. Who really cares?
Sounds like you have very first hand experience!Because of their relationship with Spain and not having the adequate facilities, they used to just dump cars in the Strait of Gibraltar when they were deemed of no further use. Thousands of them down there.
Very entitled bunch the Gibbos, but that's our fault really. We've always just given them everything to live to the point where they now expect it. They nearly had riots a few months back because the Gibraltar government put the price of petrol up to £1.20. So then the government subsidised it indefinitely so it could go back to its previous price. They tried to bring in a tax for old cars the other week. They all kicked off. Got scrapped. Pampered is an understatement.
They say they hate Spain but can't wait to get over the border every weekend to go to their holiday home in Spain or go to the market or Mercadona etc.
Oh, and they're dreadful drivers. I shudder just thinking of it
Well, yeah I'm here now. Been here the last couple of years. The positives outweigh the negatives for sure. And luckily I can't drive at the minute cos I've done my shoulder in so less stressful than usualSounds like you have very first hand experience!
He ain't lying.Sounds like you have very first hand experience!
Spain should be stripped of the title and it given to whoever finished runners up.
Rodri and Morata have been charged for the chants.
Of course it did. Got a UEFA country questioning validity of another UEFA country. Could result in violent backlash from football fans many of which, I think we all agree, do not often think crictically at times like that.Although the comments were daft I didn’t think they really warranted actual UEFA action.
Murder on the rock is a very good readA fine grasp of Irish history displayed there.
Just to bring you up to date though. In 1988 two men and a woman were shot in Gibraltar whilst going about their daily business.
It’s not quite the same, given there’s a war currently going on with 15,000 dead.Of course it did. Got a UEFA country questioning validity of another UEFA country. Could result in violent backlash from football fans many of which, I think we all agree, do not often think crictically at times like that.
What would you say if it was Russian athletes claiming Ukraine as 'theirs'???
One day Spain and Gibraltar may be drawn to play each other in qualifying. Now that's gonna be interesting....
