Roku, or other TV dongle?

I have been given a free TV for our daughters room. It's not a "smart" TV, so I want to plug in a Roku or something similiar to stream TV, and watch iPlayer, netflix etc.

Is a Roku the way to go, or is there something else better on the martket without spening a fortune?

Nothing wrong with the Roku, I have that in my daughters room for Netflix

I have two Rokus (Rokii?) they work very well make sure you get the Roku "Streaming Stick +" it supports the fastest 802.11ac wifi protocol and has a more powerful processor so it whizzes through searches.

I find the Firestick UI very clumsy. But that's after comparing it with something like Android TV on a Nvidia Shield which would be outside the kind of budget you'd want to spend.

For me - I'd look at what you want it for. For example, installing a VPN to watch a foreign Netflix region or additional apps like IPTV then a Firestick is probably best as a Roku is a lot more restrictive when it comes to apps. But if it's for basic TV apps then I prefer the Roku interface.

If you get the Firestick then make sure it's the 4k version, even if the TV isn't 4k as it's much faster than the regular one. They are always on sale for £30, probably not worth it when they aren't when you can just wait a few weeks for them to be reduced.

The Nvidia Shield is streets ahead in the streaming box game but it's much pricier.

We have a Roku in lounge 2 - it's been a godsend as the kids have been able to watch 90% of the stuff they want on it whilst we have the main TV - don't think I've ever spent a better £19.99 (was a special with £10 off in early 2019)

Roku is fine as is the Amazon Stick.

I did get a Chromecast but couldn't get it to work properly.

The Amazon Stick is always half price on Amazon's special promotional day.
