Ronnie O'Sullivan

Never won sports personality of the year and I think I read somewhere he has never ever even been nominated.
When you think of some of the sporting greats he was being compared against last night you can only speculate why that might be.

14 in a row up to 1940 then 1946. He was also world billiards champion.
Was the format not different? Pretty sure the winner only played one game the following year - the final. Not sure when that ended of courses.

Ronnie is incredible, Trump was not at it for the first two sessions and the last thing you can do is give Ronnie a chance. On his day, he cant be matched but there are enough players who can disrupt him such as Selby for example. Hopefully he can win one more to be out on his own. Love watching him and Mark Williams who was also great this year.

Dont think you can compare number of titles - it was a different era. But I think number of century breaks could be a fair comparison. Joe Davis got 689. Ronnie has more than twice as many.
Maybe centuries per frames played would be the best stat but I cant find that.

Incredibly I got to watch the championships here live in the US and even before a ball had been hit I had the feeling that the Rocket would be in the final.

I wasn’t disappointed of course but I was disappointed in the way that the game has kind of stood still in terms of talent.

Ok there’s some decent players out there but Ronnie is still far and wide the best talent in the game, and at 45 perhaps he’ll have another 10 years or maybe longer before he calls it a day.

It’s hard to believe that it’s 20 years ago since he hit that incredible 147 break in just 5 mins 13secs— genius!

Why does it matter that he's not won a phone in popularity contest when he's at the absolute top of the game he loves ?

Never got this obsession with SPOTY, and peoples first thought when someone does something amazing is whether they'll win this joke of a competition - I wonder if sport personalities actually care about it as much as the public seem to?

Well you're right. The show has history though. Its not big now but it was in years gone by. Only relatively recently has it been a phone in vote.
Its just suspicious That Ronnie has never even been nominated , the process of which I have no idea.

I wonder how the voting worked when Princess Anne won it. The show is a shambles

He is brilliant but I had to chuckle when Trump tweeted before the semi finals that he thought he had gatecrashed to world seniors by mistake

I've always loved the game and the way it has evolved into a global sport. Before the pandemic I was out working in Asia, and saw how the game has gained notoriety through mostly the likes of Hendry, Williams, Higgins, White, Spencer et al putting in the hours to make the game what it is today. The amount of billiard halls in Hong Kong is amazing but for all the asians playing the game they still haven't produced a top notch player.

Gets more respect for his 7 world championships than Lewis Hamilton does for his. Both staggering achievements
