Rooney appointed Derby boss

For me being an international player esp a striker is all about what you do in the tournaments euros and esp world cups as the rest is just lip service, and in that regard he fell well short.
Yup agree, although I don't agree that Beckham never performed. He did better than Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney in tournament football and big games.

But back to Rooney's Derby, shocking result today and symptomatic of a club in utter crisis. They could easily go down and end up asset stripped. I can't see any big money sales if they are a League One side and they could easily fall into the same situation as Pompey, Sunderland and Ipswich and remain stuck at that level for a good few years. They have a squad full of overpriced sicknotes and cloggers like Ibe, Wisdom and Waghorn. Players that seem to want out and are just not 'dying for the shirt' like Lawrence and Clarke, and then a bunch of talented youngsters who are struggling with the mess around them and might be snapped up to solve the financial crisis.

I meant beckham as in how he just hung around at the end to get the caps to reach the record long after his sell By date
Yeah, that's a fair point, his ego kept him cap gathering...I don't mean that in a terrible way, it would be difficult to not have an ego when you garnered as much attention as he did, and he is generally a good person, but yes he hing about too long when others have sacrificed ego for country

look at Malcolm Mac Donald 5 goals v Cyprus... as the majority of games England play are largely gimmes so the only real test we have are the tournaments.

that’s what puts lineker in the special bracket for me as he did it v the best and when it mattered. Rooney never really did ( esp after Euro 2004)

then we just hung on to him for sentimental reasons ( same with beckham) even though he was finished at that level.

look at lane now and how we’ve moved on from accommodating Wayne in any position we could.

have we missed him ???
So what does that make Messi then? Because he hasn't exactly set the world stage alight has he?

He's consistently scored in major tournaments, and was player of the tournament in the 2014 World Cup.

Added to that the Copa America is a smaller and more difficult competition than the Euros, so there are less opportunities.

How many international trophies has he won?

Relevance?
He has performed on the international stage.
It's a team sport.

Lineker hasn't won an international trophy, he was still good and performed for England.
Rooney has also performed on the international stage.

Fans views on Rooney and the state of "their" club......

Over the years when we haven’t had prolific strikers we have had midfield players who chipped in with double figures and defenders who got the odd goal but Rooney hasn’t even been blessed with that. It’s always likely that one scrambled goal will kill us off and the longer the game goes on the more nervous we get it seems.

we have been waiting since November to see what’s happening to our club without the people there is no club so let’s see what developes in the next two weeks before we start throwing things out the pram,as fans we will know the truth about the takeover and any intentions they have or have not for the club.

That’s what concerns me the new owner hasn’t been forthcoming and even mentioned his ambitions for the club, IF a deal was so imminent.

I’m truly worried about our current plight, while I’ll give Rooney my 100% backing I really feel we needed a no nonsense manager who could provide the players with the fight and the balls to get us out of this and be passionate on the touch line .... so long as meddling Mel let him get on with it. Very concerning times if your a dcfc fan, the club are in huge trouble.

What conclusions can we take from the 3 biggest clubs in the championship being all threatened with relegation. Totally inept, bordering on criminal management. Scandalous tbh, I think the the Premier league would be a much better division with Forest, Derby and Wednesday in place of some of the tin pot clubs. Unfortunately the fans have been let down by idiots

Wow! A Forest fan with sense and empathy. Welcome along.

You hate Forest, we hate Derby but football wouldn’t be the same if either failed to exist. Those derby days at the city ground or pride park are what we live for mate

Rooney will walk if the promises made aren’t met, so in two weeks could be no take over, no new players and no manager

I've not even read any of this thread yet ... but Derby appointing him manager is an absolute joke. Not sure what it is with that club, but they just seem to enjoy making dreadful decision after dreadful decision .. heading one way and seem determined to drop out of the Championship.

Rooney was a killer player, there's no doubt about that but for him to suddenly step into the managerial world just based on his reputation at this level, I can't believe it. He was one of the best players the country had ever seen we all know that .. but it just seems totally irresponsible to me, from the guys running this club to make this decision and give him the job of getting them promoted.

The signing of him and the number 32 thing/sponsor was even cringeworthy and something that everyone knew was not going to work, he was past it, knackered. If I was a Derby supporter I'd be furious right now. It would feel as if the club has become a laughing stock.

I may well be wrong and Rooney goes on to be a great appointment ha ha :p ... best of luck to them in that regard but Jesus Christ .. what a mess. Don't even know what their result was today but sounds like they didn't get off to the best of starts.

It's almost as bad as when Gibbo give Woodgate the role here and I expect it will go the same way.
