Russia fires warning shots at British Warship

Well you go and cheer on a dictator who has opposition politicians murdered outside the Kremlin, attempts to murder others and cracks down on dissent and is making life incredibly difficult for ordinary citizens (rather like that bastion of freedom which was the USSR).

The same USSR which signed a non-aggression pact with the nazis in order to carve up Poland (and execute a large part of the military). The same Stalin who accepted much aid from the US, ignored intelligence and threw troops to die like confetti. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten but many should never have perished.
The Soviet Union was attacked by Germany and the Axis. Stalin's ONLY option in 1941 was to commit millions of troops to a war of national survival. The Red Army's only hope of defeating the Axis was to commit troops in overwhelming numbers. Wherever and whenever the Wehrmacht fought any other armies in roughly equal numbers they won. So overwhelm them by sheer weight of numbers, or lose.

Having defeated the Axis Stalin's obvious motivation was to invade western Europe as well. FDR, Truman and Churchill realised this. The outcome of the war in Europe was decided before D Day, and having left the Soviet Union to fight alone, it's pretty obvious that D Day had to happen not to defeat the Axis but to make sure that the Iron Curtain didn't come down further west than the Eastern border of Germany.

As it was the western Allies struggled to make much progress and consequently two thirds of Germany (1939 borders) fell behind the Iron Curtain. Poland was abandoned for a second time, and Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and the Balkans were abandoned to their fate.

All this seems a bit staged tbh…

and one thing everyone seems to forget when they sensationalise it all is that the ships company of that ship all have loved ones sat at home watching it play out…

I know how they feel as I sailed 2 days after 9/11 and was also at sea when desert storm 2 kicked off… I was never in any danger but my family were in bits as were many others…

the press/media treat it all like a big movie….

True the engines are sh it… but when they work ( and they do work more often than not now) they are ok…

as for Samson… that is world class and they are looking to fit a slimed down new version onto the new type 26 and 31 frigates
True.... I joined one out of build. It was permo f*cked. You turned to port at 20 knots and had a TLF😂

Also on board was a Daily Mail journalist apparently. All naval vessels from now on should have to take a ‘Mail’ reptile with them when on these ‘Non-provocative’ jaunts.
Altogether now…”Strong Country, Great Nation”

Russia is not a democracy as we know it - for example anyone notice how long Putin has been in power?

What a couple of days before a by-election which the Conservatives have targeted to win?

The post war Soviet Union was also famous for not dabbling in other countries politics too eh? We shadow ships and aircraft in our water/airspace just like most countries do, the point is that the Crimea was illegally annexed and those waters are internationally recognised as Ukrainian, even though I do have some sympathy for Russia over the historical significance of Crimea to them.

Putin is a former KGB gangster and to compare him to western democracies is quite frankly hilarious. Our government is an inept shower of entitled imbeciles and incompetents, but they are not in the same league as the Russian government. If I showed this kind of tripe to some of my friends back in Moscow they’d despair.
Not sure I would post that stuff if I lived in Russia

When dictators have been in power for so long they cannot hand over power to anyone except family. Like North korea. But it doesnt look like thats an option for Putin. How will it all end ?
The same as it did for Yeltsin, only slightly more sober.
Guaranteed immunity, nice dacha in the country etc. I read somewhere that he is allegedly quite worried for his future, especially if he becomes ill or incapacitated.

I used to be at T45 Refit Support Group in Pompey dockyard before I left the RN.
The government were repeatedly told the engine configuration wouldn't work properly especially out in the Gulf and hotter climates, but they wanted the cheapest option.
Now it has to cart them all off to Cammell Laird in Birkenhead, cut holes in the ships side, and stick another diesel generator in each unit and a cost of £160 million.
If all my time in the mob has taught me anything, its that the MOD and the government are the absolute world leaders at wasting money.

I’m currently in the UK and not heading back until august and often use a VPN over there. Besides I’m small fry, if I was saying similar on a Russian forum or if I was a Russian stirring up trouble online then it might be wise to look over my shoulder. There’s journalists allowed into Russia who say far more damning things than I ever could, it’s a terrible corrupt government but it’s not North Korea or Turkmenistan.

It's the old adage with the MOD. They want a Cat so buy a Dog and put a modification on it.
