Ryan Giles signs..

Agree with this 100%, against average teams he did well, average Championship teams. don't mention Brighton FA cup or Burnley away.

And there's the problem. Giles came on at half time for Hull against us, we scored because of Giles poor defending fact, he never picked up Jones, too busy ball watching, away at Burnley, they targeted our left hand side and tortured Giles all game.. I was there unfortunately and seen him constantly ball watching and not picking up his runners off the ball.

Wolves sent him out on loan over several years, and he never kicked a ball for them, Yes he did well for us in the 1st half of his loan season, but then a very average 2nd half of the season, but hang on....Luton bought him for over 5M, again failed to hold a place down in there team, spending most of his short time there warming the bench, Hull come in, offer a loan deal with guarantee to buy, and again failed to hold a place down in the team. there is a common theme here... not sure what tho!!!
Some on here seem to think Giles is the new Maldini.
He was MoTM against a Luton who went up. In fact it is why they bought him.

I wouldn't be against signing Archer but only if Carrick would be willing to commit to changing the formation and going with wing-backs, which would allow us to play Archer and Lath together as a front 2.

If we sign Archer then realistically we wouldn't be able to afford to make any more signings, but I wouldn't like to think we'd sign him to sit on the bench, when we could have used to money to sign a quality LW/10.

This team below would certainly be a force to be reckoned with if we did switch to wing-backs.

That's a promotion winning team and formation.

I've been told, by a very reliable source, that we are pushing hard to get Giles over the line and expect him to be our last first team ready signing of the summer

I wouldn't be surprised to see Lenihan step back in. Carrick seems to really like Lenihan and he's probably the best CB at the club with the ball at his feet. He likes to step out with it.
Lenihan and Clarke probably competing for the left sided CB.

Agreed. If we are playing out from the back then you need the central defenders to be comfortable on the ball, so Lenihan has to be in. He started his career as a ball playing CDM, before dropping back to CB pretty quick. But you can tell he the anti-thesis of Alan Kernaghan, the ball is not a hot potato to Lenihan.

If Giles comes in and that's it for starters, then that would give us:

1st:
.........................Dieng
Ayling........Rav.........Lenihan........Giles
..............Morris......Hackney
Jones...............Azaz........McGree
...........................Lath

2nd:
........................Glover
Smith..........Fry........Clarke.....Engel
...............Howson.....Barlaser
Forss...............Gilbert..........Burgzorg
.......................Coburn

3rd:
.........................Jones
Dijksteel......Hunt......Wilson..........Bangura
.............McCabe....Cartwright
Nkrumah........Finch......Hoppe
......................Matthews

frightening side, just can't see how we afford Archer

It won't be 352, we've recruited specifically for Carricks 4231.

My only concern is the LW/10 position, quality wise. We've got some decent options in that area and Burgzorg may well be excellent, but id like another option in there, especially given the question marks over Mcgree.

Agree with all that but surely Bangura over Engel.

Makes sense if McGree stays if he doesn’t we surely need to replace him. Unless the plan is to use Bangura further forward as he will help Giles defensively.

If we are serious we need a better level of ELL cover than Coburn.
Like the lad but would doubt our consistency with him starting 15-20 games as first choice (using ELL's played stats for the last few seasons)

I think Burgzorg could be that cover, quick skilful and direct, passing his weakness which makes me think he’s ELLs cover.

also have we seen enough of Gilbert to be confident in him playing say 20 games at 10 if Azaz gets an injury?

I guess the comment earlier was no more first team starters, so we could loan a better back up for Latte Lath, unless of course we are accelerating Matthews career

No we haven't and the fact he was limited to a couple of appearances right at the death when the season was done despite us being chronically short in that area of the pitch for most of the season suggests there's not a load of confidence about him within the club.
I doubt a couple of good performances in dead rubber games would be enough to convince anyone otherwise. I think we'll bring another couple of attacking options in. A no10 and a striker. They could be loans though
