That is an awful lot of expensive talent out the door for nothing. Didn't realise Lamela was a makeweight in the Bryan Gil deal. Dele Alli alone would have been worth £50m+ not long ago, though something's gone wrong there. Record signing farmed out on loan. Disastrous business all round, not sure that's what Conte had in mind when he said their squad needs restructuring.

Then two signings from the Director of Football ringing his old club up at the last minute.

Where does this idea that Daniel Levy is a master negotiator come from?

He has the reputation because he wouldn’t allow the best players to leave until the buying club paid the biggest possible fee. He got £90m or so for Bale but also made Manchester United and Real Madrid pay massive money(at the time) for Carrick, Berbatov and Modric. They sold Kyle Walker for £50m.

He might’ve lost his touch a bit but it stems back to a couple of notable things IMO; building a new stadium at incredible expense and not allowing Pochettino to refresh the squad when he wanted to. The thing with that is that they went a while without really spending anything but then allowed Mourinho to blow a massive pile of cash on players who haven’t improved them. Under Pochettino, there was a few windows where they actually turned a profit in the market and still got into the Champions League and progressed.

Mourinho was completely the wrong appointment and has set them back years. That’s probably one of Levy’s biggest mistakes, appointing a coach who p*ssed off a load of quality players and took the team backwards having squandered a load of money. I think Levy thought a celebrity manager would guarantee trophies but he couldn’t have been more wrong.

I’m not sure the job Pochettino did for Tottenham is truly appreciated TBH. They were punching well above their weight and financial position for a very long time under him. They’ve just sort of regressed to where and what they were before they appointed him IMO.

I think he squeezed a good deal from the sale of Gareth Bale, but since then... Like a Freddy Shepherd tribute act. Perhaps it's for the best that he didn't cash in on Kane and waste the money.
7th! what an absolute waste. there was a point were they were looking like title contenders. that's passed now, they are back in the Tottenham Hotspur lane

I'm a big fan of both Kulusevski and Betancur, think they'll be successful in the EPL. That said, the outgoings are a little concerning, mainly from a commercial perspective though. They overpaid for those players and have lost out but they've all underperformed on the pitch so that's to be expected.

Sevilla fast becoming one of my favourite Spanish sides - Lamela, Ocampos and now Martial (who is expect to have a much better time of it in Spain than England).

As mentioned it seems that Spurs have had their chance and are now firmly back behind the contenders again. I suspect they'll kick themselves for many years about the season Leicester won the title. It's hard to see how their team doesn't continue the slide. Son in particular will have lots of options and might start thinking about pushing for a move.

TBH I was shocked they've managed to get so much for Ali..
The Dele Alli deal is an interesting one. The first payment clause (£10M) kicks in after he's played 20 games. Everton only have 18 games left this season.

It almost sounded like Everton could use it as a 'try before you buy'! It made me wonder what would happen if Everton played him for the rest of this season and then shipped him on in the summer?

I guess there'll be a clause in there that will mean Everton still owe Spurs something (say £20M?) if they shipped him on before he'd played 20 games.

In the Spurs Amazon Prime series there's conversation where Mourinho is challenging Alli to start really pushing on and become an elite player. I think he even mentions Alex Ferguson recommending Mourinho sign Alli when he was at Man United.

Alli has regressed massively and Everton is probably part of a journey that results in him miles away from England and another big club.

It’s interesting how many clubs are letting big players go for nothing midway through their contracts now because their wages are such a huge liability. Aubameyang, Martial, Ozil, Sanchez, even Messi though his contract was up. This is a new phenomenon, normally they’d go for some kind of fee but I guess £300k+ a week is a serious amount of money.

Easy to forget how good Dele Alli was and he’s only 25 now. Even in that Spurs doc on Amazon, when he was already in and out of the team, doesn’t he score five in Mourinho’s first few games and set up loads more? He was exceptional.
