Shearer on Juninho

There's a few different ones isn't there? Didn't he win Carling player of the year, which I think was the sponsor of prem player of the year, but not the players player or writers player?

Yeah it was premier League player of the year he won. Which is obviously relevant as the list is best south Americans to have played in the premier League.

Suarez is the only other South American to have won the award.

I do think his reputation is unfairly tarnished a bit because the Juninho in his 2nd and 3rd spells was a significant level below the 96/97 pre broken leg version (albeit still a very good player).

No-one under 30 is going to remember what he was like that year.

Saurez and Aguero were both better players than junhino. Not sure about the others on the list though.

I liked watching asprilla, it was like someone had taught a daddy long legs how to dribble but not bothered explaining the aim of the game.

Better finishers yes, but better players? Nah, not for me.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. But saying that, Juninho was also a good finisher, despite being a midfielder/ attacking mid.

Better strikers yes, certainly, but Juninho was a "better player" for me, at least at his peak.

Put Juninho in either of those sides and he could have got 20 goals too, if he had more help, not been man marked/ double marked. He got 12 for us in the league in 96-97, which was only four behind Rav's 16, who had just scored in the Champions league fine a few months earlier.

Yeah, as much as I love Aguero and Suarez, did they pick up the ball in their own half, beat half a dozen players then play an inch perfect pass to the striker? Maybe a couple of times but not every game.

And I just asked the lads in the office, and bearing in mind I don't live and work on Teesside, and there is no favouritism, they all agreed that Juninho was the better footballer and the other two 'better' in and around the box and better goal scorers.

People seem to forget too that Juninho was the Number 10 for the world champions and was supplying the passes for Ronaldo in the mid to late 90's. You only had to watch that Umbro Cup tournament at Wembley to see how incredible a player he was.

Talk about rose tinted glasses.

I think that belittles a strikers skill in finding space and getting into positions to score goals. It's probably tougher than dribbling and beating men. Goalscorers go for such big money for that reason.

Not at all, as I said, I love both players and they are both exceptional. I just think Juninho was a better footballer and he stood out in a lesser team.

No worries, we'll just have to disagree on who we think is better.

I think Aguero is undoubtedly no 1 but Juninho is right up there, sensational footballer. No one comes close to Aguero though the quality year in year out and titles and arguably the most memorable moment in premier league history.

I think that may have been a joke, surely.

Nope. You're telling me you think Gilberto Silva was a better footballer Juninho? A footballer, not a holding player, not someone who broke up play and passed to better players in the side?

Again, very happy to disagree with you. Does seem pretty clear to me that you don't rate Juninho as highly as others which I find bizarre, but that's your prerogative.

Suarez scored some of the finest goals in Premier League history. Solo goals too.

He’s a far better player than Juninho ever was, like it or not. So is Aguero.

I wouldn’t put Juninho in their class at all. Juninho was a very good player, underrated by other fans, but probably overrated by ours in terms of his standing among the worlds best players, which he was never really among.

I didn't say that! I am suggesting that the poster who did say it was joking.

While I agree Suarez and Aguero were better. I don't agree they were "far' better though. Not the 96/97 version. He was in their class that season. Premier League player of the season says it wasn't just Boro fans who had that high an opinion of him either.

It's hard to compare because they were both surrounded by top class players. They also play in different positions. But all elite players capable of making top class defenders looks slow and clumsy.
