Springsteen - Only the strong survive

The wife bought me this for Christmas and love it. He even sings my favourite song, Do I Love You (Frank Wilson), really well and it’s certainly grown on me since I first heard it.

The best song on the album is his version of The Nightshift - excellent cover.

I like this album a lot. Surprised me too. His backing musicians are of course superb, but so are his vocals.

I like the first two tracks most, but actually Nightshift is the one I am least keen on, not that it's bad.

I've just said to the wife that he doesn't sing them all well but his vocals and of course the backing vocals, are superb.

I think he sings them well in that he does clearly love and respect the originals and all this type of soul music, which comes across in the vocals I think. Mostly though the original vocals are king. Except on the first two tracks where I think Springsteen nails it. I also love his vocals on the final track, the Diana Ross Supremes cover.

I am a big Springsteen fan but I think it’s a bit of a curate’s egg. I like the versions of Do I Love You and Nightshift but there are some real stinkers such as 7 Rooms Of Gloom and When She Was My Girl. And does the world need yet another cover of The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore?

Looking forward to seeing him again at Murrayfield in May. Making a week of it in Edinburgh so I can do my Rebus trail and have a few in the Ox (Oxford bar).

I love it, and as others have said his cover of NIghshift is brilliant.

Looking forward to seeing him in Hyde Park in July, and Zurich in June (I think I'll have to dig the tickets out), although not sure how many of the songs of OTSS he'll do on the tour.

“ His backing musicians are of course superb”
Checked out the musicians on the album.
He didn’t seem to use any, apart from one guy. Ron Aniello.
(bass, drums, guitar (all tracks); percussion (1–10, 14, 15), piano (1–6, 8–15), organ (1–4, 6–8, 10–15), vibraphone (1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 13, 14), keyboards (3, 5, 7, 8, 10–13, 15), glockenspiel (4, 7, 12), background vocals (5); chimes, timpani (14))
Used the E Street Horns and a fair few Backing vocalists
Aniello, Who also co- produced, engineered and mixed it. Busy boy!

Seems a bit bit strange for someone like Springsteen.
No doubt the band for the shows will be great.

Just listened to it on prime &:it is a bit excellent.. though who could fail with the songs he's covered.. Only the strong, is quality though What Becomes.. is up there..

I think what I like about it is, it is Springsteen's gravely vocals singing to it like the rest of us do in the shower.
