Steffen

The fact is, we’re talking about Steffen almost every week. But most importantly HE’S NOT OUR KEEPER. If he’s not staying here, why are we playing him? The idea was this season was a developmental season, wasn’t that why Carrick was appointed?

The pass was a shocker. It's not just that it went straight to their player but it also was never on in the first place. Even if he'd somehow threaded it through the gap our player would've been immediately under pressure in a dangerous area.

Unfortunately it seemed to set the tone for the rest of the defence. Bit like Steve Harmisons first ball in the ashes. Big game like that you need to show you're on it from the start and it did exactly the opposite.

I do think he's been broadly decent enough though. Chances of us paying anything like what he's on at City are pretty much zero, so any of his detractors panicking at the thought of signing him permanently can probably relax.

If thats the thought pattern I'd rather recall Sol Brynn and play him than Roberts. Roberts has played 4 games and was at very poor and at fault for goals in 2 of them.

It's always the way that people try to pin the blame on certain players after a defeat.

A big part of the way we play is possession based and he is comfortable being part of that, but this will always lead to mistakes.

Even the best at it make mistakes, Edison for example and even yesterday Sarr made a bigger mistake than Steffen's.

He's been infinitely better that what we had last season and yesterday I thought his performance was mixed - there was some good stuff and some not so good stuff.

Whether he's here next season remains to be seen, but he certainly not a weak link in this team.
he is the weakest link in this team, inspires no confidence in our players or fans, well below an acceptable standard !

1. No he isn't
2. Made up
3. Extrapolated from your own (flawed) opinion
4. Again your opinion and based on a few things that he has done which NEARLY led to goals (but didn't)

In your opinion of course.

I think the manger and players would disagree with that and I fully expect him to remain our no.1 for the remainder of the season.

He is on mad money with city so he wont be here next year wherever we are so that is why it was a sin not to play roberts in the fa cup game & maybe a run in the team he is a decent keeper after all.
Would all the people keep him on the mad money he is on knowing he hasnt a chance of getting in the city team.

Steffen is a good keeper, he's a bit to relaxed my liking sometimes but a good Goalkeeper nonetheless.

He won't be here next season, regardless of division I don't think.
I'd put Sol Brynn in next season, then again he'd probably get torn apart after 1 mistake

The problem with Brynn is he's not played at a very high level. The step up to the championship seems quite big for keepers. We've had a few who've done really well in league one or two but struggled here.

However well he's done it's a big ask for him to go from league 2 to starting for a championship promotion contender. But of course I'd trust Carrick's judgement if he thought he was ready.

The big issue there is the skill set required to play league 1 and 2 is very different.

In those leagues its all about balls into the box so your keeper needs to be comfortable coming for crosses, which is what Roberts is good at. Very few teams play out from the back so its much less demanding when in possession.

I'd be very wary signing a keeper from league 1 and 2 due to these issues, however, Sol has been brought through at Boro so he will have been drilled about playing out with the ball.

Appreciate it’s a step up to play in the Championship. But this is the same MFC that recently hoyyed Ainsley Pears into the first team. IIRC Pears had much less experience??

Not a great example I appreciate as Pears was poor. But does suggest a club willing to take risks

Pears, Steele, Turnbull, Jones........

It's always possible we might have learnt our lesson by now! 🤪

Is that A joke as since Randolph we’ve had some horrendous keepers
No, you're just judging the timescale too narrowly:

Platt, Pears, Miller, Schwarzer, Crossley, Given & Randolph, even as recently as Dimi... however in the last few seasons we've had very few that inspire confidence & Steffen is possibly best of the bunch & even he is prone to some big lapses that we're not use to..

Quality keeper is a big priority for next season.. it may even be one of our lads out on loan atm..

I wasn't going to add any comments on another Steffen thread, already commented on him a few times, but your comments are comical.

Do you actually see him live or just watch him at home on the tv with your slippers on?

How many times has he done a stupid pass, and put us under unnecessary pressure., yes they NEARLY led to goals (but didn't), that's not the point, the point is, he continues to make them stupid laid back passes.

That ridiculous pass he did yesterday, got their crowd up, and changed the whole atmosphere in the ground, and we only got away with it because they missed the target.

He looked lethargic all game, yes he saved the penalty, a poor penalty at that, but palmed it back into the danger area, however the main point on the penalty and sending off, is a more alert keeper would have raced out and cleared the ball, he had loads of time to access the danger, Fry wasn't catching Stewart, but Stewart wasn't fully in control of the ball and if Steffen had come out he would of cleared the ball.

The point i'm making as well as many other posters, is that steffen continues to look foolish in goal and makes too many mistakes, also adding unnecessary nervousness within the team and the crowd.

Indeed I do. With your good self it seems to be more a case of watching but not understanding.

For example your interpretation of his penalty save. He was actually undone by it being a poor penalty, he had dived past the ball and had to reach back to stop the ball going in the net, unfortunately that mean that the ball rather than going wide or over was bound to go back across the goal and as Stewart had a ten yard start on any other outfield player he was always favourite to tap in. Ironically, if Stewart had hit it more accurately into the corner he would have saved it.

As for the rest. "A more alert keeper" and stuff like that.

Dear me.

The irony.

His ridiculous pass out in the first half was utterly brainless and should have resulted in a goal.
He spilled a routine shot for the rightly disallowed goal, but he didn't know that. He doesn't hold shots.
He is rooted in his area for the first goal - the sweeper keeper who doesn't sweep.

He is rooted on the spot for the second goal, he doesn't move at all.
For the penalty, it is incredible he pushes the ball where he does.

I've watched it live and the highlights numerous times. He is a recurring problem.

And your use of the word "should" tells me all I need to know about your confirmation bias.

I'm done on this subject. Steffen will play on Saturday, I'm sure he'll do something that will go in your notebook.

Enjoy that.

So their best player is 12 yards from goal with a free shot on goal under no pressure. Steffen is beaten, but I have confirmation bias because I believe they should have scored?
Righto.
