Steffen

I always tend to think keepers get a bit of unfair criticism from our fans, Steffen included.

Any keeper will make mistakes when playing out from the back, even the best in the world do, its a risk when we play the way we do, but the rewards justify it. Same for done of the outfield players too, but the more practiced we are the less it should happen.

Overall I think he's been an excellent signing so far and I don't think there's many keepers who I'd say were clearly better at this level.
I don’t remember Randolph or Given getting any criticism while they were here because they were both consistently excellent while still making the very rare mistake.

It was happening nearly every game with Steffen not so long ago.

I think Randolph did to begin with. Funnily enough the criticism stopped when Pulis took over and Randolph was clearly told to clear his lines rather than try and play out a bit. Funny that.

Fair play to Steffen, can't always be easier sticking to the style while getting pelters from pensioners who still think it's the 70s and the keepers primary job is to catch the ball and hoof it up the pitch as far as possible.

Disagree, in part at least and maybe these are the exception that prove the rule.

Schwarzer, our best ever keeper arguably and one of our best value signings was criticised regularly I recall.

Which is why I didn’t mention Schwarzer. The two I did mention I don’t remember ever had the fans on their back. Randolph was a massive upgrade on Guzan and Dimi who I also don’t remember getting much criticism.

OK with his feet but why can’t he catch a cross? I worry when teams attack us. Sorry to disagree, especially as we are on a high, but watched Karl Darlow the other week (a reserve) and would rather have him. No doubt somebody will show his mistakes on youtube. By the way I will soon be a pensioner but I’ve still got my own hair. Lost more this year than the last 20. Must be this passing out from the back!

he was hardly pressurised today so while I'm in the "agree" camp with the fact he's improved the problem is that the competition has not been at a level to really test him.

The question is would city have him in there team No is the answer so they are looking for a payday on him is it going to be us.

I’ll say again it’s risk v reward with Stefan what you see is what you get you either take him and his relaxed style or you don’t because he’s not going to change.

Carrick is the only one that matters snd he is more than happy with him.

He’s an excellent keeper with a crazy side.

My highlight was when he came out of his box to pick the ball up and pass it back to fry behind him across his own box. 😎

If he’s available for transfer and we can afford it I think we would be daft not to sign him, far too many times since Schwarzer left the GK position has been overlooked to our detriment.

Confirms he’s not going back:
Fair play to him, if anything grips my **** about the modern game, it's players sat on their butt earning 3m+ for playing 6 League Cup games in 4 years. Get out there, get playing, finish your career with matchday memories to look back on not training ground ones.

Obviously tough for a keeper maybe more than other positions if you are a number 2 with no realistic chance of playing (not even coming on as a substitute). You have to really train your mind to it, and I think it affected him mentally more than anything else. He's obviously enjoying playing regularly for us. Let's hope he can maybe compromise a bit on his wages to make it a successful transfer if that is what all parties involved want, come the end of the season.

A lot easier to say you aren't going back when it's probably pretty clear that you would be third choice at best if you returned. It's likely that he knows Man City would prefer to move him on if they can.

I suspect his City contract makes him 'unsellable' in the sense that he may not command a fee. City will be looking for a deal that gets him off the books. It might involve paying someone to take him.

Interesting read. Though the big question from the article - should it be 'Middlesbrough is' or 'Middlesbrough are'?
"Middlesbrough is third in the standings..."
