Stewart Park/Teesside Play Parks

Growing up I always remember Albert Park had the best play area, Slides as high at Lamp Posts, endless row of swings along the back fence, see-saws, roundabouts that actually went round more than 2 rotations before stopping

Preston Park also had a good play park and animal enclosure (did it have a Penguin Pen or am I just imagining that?)

Stewart Park never had a play area, but did have plenty of animals to go and see ....

Today I took the girlfriend (who lives in Newcastle) and her 8 year old daughter and all I can say it what a disappointment!

4 or 5 items of the play equipment fenced off and broken and hardly any animals at all now. I understand Councils have had to cut their budgets and things like play areas and maintaining them will be way down the list, but the standard of play parks in this neck of the woods compared with other places such as South Tyneside and Humberside are somewhat pi$$ poor

I'm guessing Askham Bryan has now taken over the running of the animal enclosures in Stewart Park?

We're always out and about so I've visited many parks all over the Region, last weekend we were down in Hull (on route to Butlins - the new Sky Park was impressive too) and visited East Park. Even the play park in Whitby is more impressive than any on Teesside. We like a walk around Peasholm Park, but its let down by its lack of play area. Kinderland probably contributed to this when it was across the road

Remember the slide, apart from that huge spiders web and Giant Slide there's not much to the play area there now.

People travel from all over to Preston Park, there’s always busses full, not my favourite.

Ropner is my local park and is a beauty.

I think Stewart Park is great as well, a great walk.

I 've started to enjoy albert park with the grandkids...2 play parks, nice to have a wander round, dorman museum, take a few snacks..up to creams for a treat

Not many fenced off so full of irresponsible dog owners too which is a problem for my kids since a dog attack.

We went all the way to Harrogate to valley gardens for a park this week. Better areas seem to have people who are more considerate and okay equipment looked after. Dogs on leads etc.

Romano park is good. Kirkleatham too. We travel to a few on Darlington. Visited one in Bradford on the holidays in the big park there and that was superb.

You mention Valley Gardens, probably the best one down that neck of the woods having lived in Knaresborough for 3 years. As nice as Rowntree Park is in York, the play area isnt up to much.

The Park in Bradford may well have been Lister/Manningham Park another good one for play equipment

My wife previously worked for Askham as a careers advisor and was based in Stewarts Park. I do believe the courses AB offers students are around the animals in the park and also park maintenance. I think the council still have a large say in what goes on in the park and The Lodger will correct me if I am wrong. Prior to her leaving, AB had made many cuts to staff and the courses it was offering students.

Stewarts Park has been blighted by vandals for many years now and they have also targeted the animal enclosures. On several occasions when the wife worked there they arrived to find that animals had been tortured and killed in the enclosures. An awful thing to greet you but made worse when a portion of the students had anxiety issues and came in to find the animals they cared for had been killed by mindless idiots.

I drive past Ropner going to my son's house and it is good to see families with balls and games heading in or out of the park. I have never been in the park itself but it does look well maintained as you drive by.
