Stewie Downing Retires

I am old. I thought I was old when he started as a youth. He's done an entire football career in my time. I'm' only 5 years older than him mind. Stewie Downing is old.

Good luck to him. Not many boro players go on to achieve what he did in his career. I kind of think his second spell here tainted his legacy at the club, I think it was more he was a victim to his own previous success and expectations where to high. Would of rather remembered him for his cross to Massimo Mac.

Brilliant career overall, would have been better for him legacy wise if he didn't resign for what was an underwhelming second spell.

He was amazing when he first broke through and I thought he'd go on to be a regular for England and a top 4 team (wasn't far off either to be fair).

Got a lot of criticism in his last spell admittedly but he’s been a terrific servant for the club and the game of football .

He was absolutely brilliant first time around. Remember his crosses during the 2 European comebacks. What a player he was then.

Not quite the same level when he came back, but the club were not exactly blameless for some of that.

Deserved his England caps.

Great career when you look back on it.

Brilliant player during that 1st spell, the quality of his crossing was superb. A shame things didn't really work out when he returned. Hopefully the 1st spell is what most will ultimately remember.

Thanks for the memories was always a big fan of his. The young Stewart Downing was truly a class player with pace, balance and the most wicked left foot in the league at the time. The Steau game he was unplayable and IIRC when we played Lazio the old, seasoned Portuguese Fernando Couto was absolutely roasted by him and he admitted as much after the game.
