Stockton and Darlington Railway

Port Darlington in 1830 = the Boro.
I am told that Port Darlington was specifically the port, the coal staithes which were a revolutionary design by Timothy Hackworth that allowed a coal wagon to enter directly off the new terminus of the Stockton and Darlington railway and be lifted to tip their cargo into the hold of a ship. This was a big game changer.
The settlement that was planned by Richard Otley was called Middlesbrough. It was based on what they called a grid iron plan. Very like New York all the streets at right angles to one another. It was all owned by the Owners of Middlesbrough Estate who repeated the same operation at the next railway terminus for a new seaside town at Saltburn.

It’s criminal how neglected the the Stockton and Darlington railway is.

as there ate not many world firsts in this region but we have a genuine world first a truly historic global event that really did change the entire globe.

How many realise that the small cottage like building next to Halfords surround by overgrown plants was actually the first railway ticket office in the entire world.

That little building was the first of its kind that little building led to what we now see across the planet.

I was at a political event locally with Glenda Jackson back in the day and she was Under Secretary of State for Transport, having drinks beforehand I told her about the Stockton and Darlington railway etc.. she had no idea, but used what I told her in her speech just ten minutes later. One of my minor claims to fame.
She liked a drink, smoked like a chimney, and swore like me, cracking lass to be fair.

Glenda Jackson - Only Osca winner to be a UK Minister?

Ref Stockton and Darlington - I agree unbelievable history is our region and certainly in the Stockton and Yarm area seems to be forgotten.
