Stockton Calling ...................what a great day out.

I would like to thank everyone involved in Stockton Calling for making it such a wonderful day. Great day great weather and some excellent music heard.

For a long while, stars of the day for me were The Headshrinkers who were like a more up-tempo Yard Act. They were brilliant. However the magnificent Bob Vylan pipped them at the post. He was the outstanding act amongst many great artists for me. I had not seen Walt Disco before but loved them in a full Georgian Theatre. HYYTS well they were just as HYYTS should be amazing.

A special mention for great sets from Shakin’ Nightmares who opened show(for me) and Stebee who is the lead singer/guitarist from Mouses. He played a wonderful solo set that just put a huge smile on the faces of everyone in The Green Room.

Disappointments for me were the obvious clashes and some venues being full so you couldn’t get in. So we missed Youth Sector whom I was told were excellent. Did not even try to get in for The Reytons who should have played a much bigger venue. The queue was massive even after they had started their set. We missed Retro Video Club who I heard were excellent but they clashed with Walt Disco and then we went to make sure of getting in for Bob Vylan. As it turns out we could have caught the end of RVC and still got in.

Musical disappointments for me were Frankie Beetlestone who were not really my cup of tea. Nothing at all wrong with him and he was going down well enough while I was still there. And I’m sorry to say Swim School left me a bit cold. Another band going down well with the audience but for me were just a bit “white rice”. Maybe I was expecting to much but after seeing similar female fronted bands this year in Coach Party and Francis of Delirium I just thought that Swim School were nowhere near as good as either.

Didn’t stay for Venus Grrls as a mate had arranged a lift back to Redcar

Yeah, we were going to catch the Reytons after seeing Pigeon Detectives but the queue was ridiculous.

I quite enjoyed Courting, who played Ku Bar. Good energetic set and the frontman worked the audience well. Probably not everyone's cup of tea but they had a ramshackle quality to the them that I like.

I quite enjoyed Frankie Beetlestone, although I feel his set suffered due to sound issues. I thought some of his lyrics were cleverly written.

The sound didn't help frankie beatlestone but I quite enjoyed them, rats were good but ony did about 20 mins, enjoyed HYYTS, Walt disco and Nel unlit

asredastheycome, our paths must have crossed on more than one occasion as I can fully concur with many of that (unless I actually know you already which is quite possible...?!)

I too kicked off with The Shakin' Nightmares (always a solid bet) and until seeing the magnificent Bob Vylan, Headshrinkers were also my top pick of the day. I thought they were amazing (cross between The Fall / JD Perhaps?) and the singer Garran was packed out with so much attitude it was great.

But to be honest, BV just blew the socks off anyone for me and I'd put my balls on the line and say he was probably the best headliner going. I don't think Stickys quite knew what hit them.

I'll be honest and say I'd never heard of him till a few days before but from seeing various band T-shirts and seeing make-shift Bob Vylan leather jackets walking around there just seemed to be a buzz leading up to his performance. For me it was a no-brainer.

Parmoboy I had Courting down on my reserve list so would have quite liked to see them so will watch out for them in the future.

POINT BLANKTEESSIDE you summed it up perfectly there mate. Headshrinkers I definitely want to see again. Bob Vylan is a must see again. Like you I didnt know much about him, and had only heard a couple of sings before the day. But seeing the Tshirt and logos all over intrigued me. So much so we missed Retro Video Club completely to make sure we got in for B.V. As it was we probably would have been ok as Stickys was bigger than I expected it to be. I was surprised to see how much material he has already released . There is a couple of albums on Bandcamp with a new one due this month.
