ALL ABOARD FOR SUMMER WITH MIDDLESBROUGH MUSEUMS!

Middlesbrough Museums have released their summer line-up of activities and it’s a bumper season packed full of family fun.​

Visitors to Captain Cook Birthplace Museum can enjoy tales of the deep sea, a pirate fun day and a choice of three trails across the museums and park - inside the museum and outside exploring Stewart Park.

The Dorman Museum has a host of regular activities including the Virtual Reality (VR) Jungle Boat Ride, a family-friendly trail around the museum and two special exhibitions: Layers of Lace and Celebrating Connections.

Two additional extra special events featuring a pop-up puppet theatre and baby dinosaurs can be enjoyed later in the school holidays.

The full line-up of events includes:

Captain Cook Birthplace Museum
  • The Deep, Saturday, August 6, 10am to 4pm: Join our deep sea performers as they tell intrepid tales of exploring the deep sea including crafts inspired by the temporary exhibition Bottled Ocean. Free with museum admission.
  • Pirate Day, Saturday, August 20, 10am to 4pm: Ahoy there shipmates! Voyage across to sea to gain your sea legs and meet a host of friendly seafaring characters along the way. A packed day of activities and entertainment throughout the museum which includes pirate performers, crafts, giant parrots and seahorses, special effects makeup demonstrations, storytelling and object handling. Museum admission and trail costs apply.
  • Ship’s Cat Trail, until September 4: Find the cats that have escaped throughout the museum. Includes a maze, spot the difference, fun facts and a design competition. Free with museum admission.
  • Stewart Park Island Trail, until September 4: The pirate captain has spilled rum all over the treasure map! Solve the clues and uncover the missing parts of the long-forgotten treasure. £2 per trail
  • Bottled Ocean exhibition, until November 6: A unique collaboration between international artist, George Nuku, and local communities, featuring over 4,000 reused plastic bottles. An enchanting underwater seascape that considers and challenges our use of plastic and how the creatures within the deep sea might adapt. Free with museum admission.
Dorman Museum

  • Folk Tales with Whippet Up, Saturday, August 27, 11am to 12.30pm & 1.30pm to 3.30pm: A pop-up puppet theatre telling local tales of folklore and the opportunity to make your own puppet to perform! A small fee will apply.
  • Baby Dino Day, Saturday September 3, 10am to 4pm: Join the team of intrepid Jurassic explorers and get up close with the baby dinosaurs! Visitors can also handle real-life dinosaur fossils that are millions of years old and take part in dino crafts. A small fee will apply for the workshops.
  • Virtual Reality Jungle Boat Ride, until September 4, 10.30am to 3.30pm: Hop aboard the jungle boat for a fully immersive, 360 degree experience! Includes sights, sounds and motion. Take advantage of the summer special price, £3.50 per person or £12 for a group of 4. Book online via www.ticketsource.co.uk/museum or check availability at the welcome desk upon arrival
  • Flower Trail, until September 4: Discover rare species of flowers, become a botanist and identify the strange flowers that you can find. Activity sheet includes a maze, spot the difference, fun facts and a design competition. £1 per trail.
  • Layers of Lace: celebrate 40 years of the Cleveland Lace Guild in a stunning new exhibition featuring traditional and contemporary designs. A colourful and vibrant display, it showcases the best in local lacemaking talent. Free entry.
  • Celebrating Connections: Through objects, photographs and film, this new temporary exhibition captures the journey of a group of people who were born in or migrated to Middlesbrough. Meeting every week at the museum since the start of 2022 they explored their own experiences of community and what connects us as human beings.
Free entry.

Visitors to the Middlesbrough Mela can also pop along to the museums stand and make a mask inspired by the Mela. A free event, save the date for Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14 in Albert Park.

  • The summer programme at Middlesbrough Museums will be available Tuesdays to Sundays.

Admission to the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum is £4 for adults, £2.50 for concessions or visitors can buy an Explorer Pass for £10 which allows repeat visits throughout the season.

A small charge of £2 applies for the outdoor family trail around Stewart Park.

Admission to the Dorman Museum is free. Additional charges apply for the VR Jungle Boat Ride and a small fee will be incurred at the two events to cover the costs of workshop materials.
