Tactical approach next season

Preferably 6ft plus
I remember when we loaned that Makouda thought, yup, 6 foot 3 sh!thouse, exactly what our club needed. Warnock fell out with him though, put him on the naughty step with Lukas Nmecha. Both done pretty well for themselves since.

Anyway we need someone like that, big, intimidating, physical.

I dont buy the theory if we get better defensively it directly impacts atacking play. Look at Burnley look at man city Liverpool the great man utd teams all scored lots of goals but were miserly at the back. We need a third high quality centre back to play instead of or rotate with fry and Lenihan. Two new fullbacks who have the athleticism and quality to play the high intensity game carrick desires. Finally we need a good all round centre mid who is as good without the ball breaking up play as with it with howson and Hackney effectively fighting for the other central spot.

Would be an interesting one if we did sign a player who could do what the OP suggests.

Not sure if he’s capable of doing it but the fact Brandon Williams will be available from Man U and Carrick knows him he could potentially be a shout.

He’s a right footed left back too so slotting into midfield when we’re on the ball may suit him. It’s a tough gig though and you have to be very clever to play the role.
I have been saying Brandon Williams is good enough to be a midfielder in the championship, I rate him highly and think we would have a gem if MC can get him in .

Jake Cooper CH 1.99m
Hector Kyprianou CM 1.89m
Oli McCburnie CF 1.88m
A solid spine

Maybe, maybe not. I guess my point is we had a soft underbelly. The biggest indicator of this is that we lost too many away games last season to be truly challenging. We lost 12 away games, way more than our direct competition. We have to find a way of being more resilient.

To put it in perspective only 4 other teams lost more away games than us and 2 were relegated....which means Wigan, who came bottom, lost less away games than us.

We have to improve our defending, we have to be able to withstand pressure particularly away from home, when teams are lobbing balls in and pinning us back. we need someone alongside Lenihan that can put the body on the line, bully attacking players, and clear everything. We also need that shield in front, someone that can work at denying the space for dangerous balls forward.

They don't have to be a prime Kante, they have to be a championship Kante.

Players like Ben Sheaf, Lewis Travis, Ben Whiteman, Marvelous Nakamba. These kind of players would have given us legs, resilience, options on how we play, and can still play a bit with the ball

But 4/5 of those defeats were under wilder and 2 at the end, when the playoffs were secured. I don’t expect massive overhaul of the playing style. Just aim to do plan A better and more consistent.

Yes he improved beyond what wilder was getting. However it’s still far too many away defeats, Burnley had 2. We need to be at least 4 less away defeats next season.

Blackpool was our ONLY clean sheet away from home. That’s not sustainable.is t just down to wilder, and is about as indicative as you can get regarding a soft underbelly.

I actually think they tweaked the system towards the end of the season to make us more defensively sound and it back-fired. It made sense to do it, especially if we had been promoted, but a mix of injuries and slight loss of form among our forwards combined badly with it. It was still narrow margins. In the first match against Coventry we were overwhelming them and if one of the chances had gone in, I think we would have gone on to win. When that didn't happen, you could see us start to conserve a draw rather than pressing to win.

The style we play is actually very demanding and I think, if anything, they will be looking to make it simpler. The key is not so much tactical innovation as it is getting the players so familiar with how we play that they can perform it better. In particular, not so much "plan B" as familiarity with what to do when a team presses high, sits back, does the hockey-pokey etc.

We have only had half a season and it takes time to make this kind of style second nature.
Agree with all of that. Interesting opening post though.

Look what Burnley done
They had dynamic full backs and one real creative number 10 type. The rest of them were hard working well drilled to the system he wanted and that formula worked a treat because they did not have better players than us - oh, and they had a 17 game start on us because we had gene wilder at the helm

Carrick averaged 1.93 points a game. Which would make 89 points over a full season. There’s not a lot to change, to get that to enough for automatic places

Agreed, but what does need to change and is probably easier is getting some defensive solidity. It’s not like he’s going to eke out another 10 goals a season from the team. It’s more likely we can concede 10 less.

Completey agree it only takes a couple of quality signings at the back to make us far more resilient. Look at the way vandijk transformed Liverpool defensively. For me no 1 priority would be purchasing not loaning a top quality centreback.
