Taking the Tesla to Truro?

I have written this question out a few times in EV threads but never posted thinking it was I being stupid. It seems like a lot of holidays towns are not prepared to deal with the rise in the number of electrical vehicles.

The government needs to make considerable investments in EV chargers.

I used to live in North Devon. The infrastructure certainly lags behind areas with larger towns and cities. However there are charging points available.

The problem is worse in the summer, in a lot of small seaside towns it is hard to get a parking place, never mind one with a charging point.

Try to stay somewhere where you can charge overnight.
Also I would stop and charge at Taunton Deane services on the M5, that should give you enough charge to get to your final destination with a decent range to get around.

The lack of EV charging points isn't only in this country, I have noticed it in France and the summer resort we visit over there.

I think it is always going to be the case in popular areas but still, there needs to be an increase in charging points.

Thanks for the advice on which service station to stop at but I am not taking a Tesla to Truro, that is the Guardian headline. ;)

I still drive an ICE vehicle.

Like everything else in this effing country, the government leaves it to private finance when it needs the state to invest in large-scale EV charging. Theres plenty of money to be made from chargers as well as the obvious environmental benefits s there isnt any excuse.

Could you imagine the revenue they could make from it?

Oh, why share it out when they can privatise it and make money for themselves?

I'm still waiting to understand what the "obvious environmental benefits" are exactly

Have just checked zap map and there are 4 lots of Hugh speed chargers in Truro? So is the article making things up? Good opportunity for hotels to fit destination chargers and make yourselves more likely to get bookings. Anyone having destination charging will be at a competitive advatange.

You would think that would be the way forward.

Also remember, that the article is highlighting the lack of charging points across popular destinations across the country and I do think this needs addressing.

To be fair, I notice a lot of things I'm not looking for too
Maybe I have been considering changing my car and have looked at how we would cope in the quiet areas that we visit.

The closest to my resort are at an E.leclerc supermarket and there are always busy. Even the petrol station struggles to cope with ICE vehicles, this isn't singling out EV's.

Edit: The above attached article could have been written about holiday destinations being overwhelmed by tourists every summer, and not about any type of vehicle.

Sorry I was being facetious at yet another anti ev hatchet job. Didn't mean to take it out on you. And I agree, we need to ramp up infrastructure now. It's too obvious that ev are the future so sales have exceeded expectations.

FWIW I've taken my car to 3 rural places for holidays. One in Germany, one in France and one in the UK. I was actually surprised at the amount of chargers. Especially in France. And when I went to the lakes there were way more than I expected. I guess there is an uneven spread in more remote areas

I’ve done North Wales with EV, and doing Skegness next week. Both places to stay have charging points. But looking around each area it’s pretty weak otherwise. Infrastructure is lacking, usually if I can find a McDonald’s it’s good for a fast charge but 💰

Always go for the maccydee option! They are mainly instavolt and in my experience the most reliable of all chargers. Premium electricity too so you get more BHP. Fact

As I said above, I was going to previously ask this question on EV threads regarding holiday destinations and charging and then felt the answer could be answered by using common sense.

I went to Cornwall on holiday last summer (including Truro) and it was a pain charging the car. Most places we went had 1 or 2 chargers if you were lucky and the majority of them were either inconveniently placed (nowhere near where you would park for the day) or broken. I did see some being built so it was improving but we literally had to plan days out around charging the car which meant we had to miss things that we wanted to do just to do something else because there was a charger there. We stayed in multiple locations over the week and none of them had charging.

We did manage but it definitely highlighted the issue.

Sadly where we are at the moment @Boro in Devon suggestion is the best. Not ideal but I tend to do this if I'm worried about destination charging: stick it on a long charge before I get there. I think that's part 9g the misinformation. People without ev think you need to charge all the time. If I'm spending 200 miles driving around when I'm on holiday I've gone to the wrong place!

I think part of it is misinformation spread by articles above and part of it 8s not understanding EV, fear of changing habits. As I've mentioned befroe., Onceyou have one, you'll find it odd that people make specific journeys to petrol statiobsto fuel their car. The majority of people will just wake up with enough fuel to do whatever they have to do. Every day

Come to Redcar, but not all at once. We have two charging points at Redcar only ever seen one used so come along and form an orderly queue.
