Just watching the 400m, 800m finals, and disappointing to see no GB runners in the men's finals, plus the hammer throw, shotput etc.

Thinking back, we had the best 4x400m relay team, Christie and Regis in the 100 and 200, Cram, Ovett, Coe, Mckean, Backley, Colin Jackson, Paula Radcliffe, Denise Lewis etc

As an outsider to the UK for some years now, have GB not been as successful, or have I got it wrong (not unheard of) and GB has had a good track and field olympics.

Edited. Have just seen that the ladies and men have qualified for the 100m relay final, and also 1 in the ladies high jump final, grear news, so maybe talking out if my arris

Men have a good chance of a medal as well in 4x100m.

Women's 1500m and pole vault also possibilities.

In the run up to 2012 UK sport wanted to establish centres of excellence for the British team of each sport to be based at, like British Cycling at the Manchester Velodrome, & IIRC UK Athletics decided not to participate as the top athletes didn't want to relocate or change their own training programmes to suit a more centralised model.

I believe that subsequently there are regular training camps at Loughborough University but athletes don't have to attend/be based there as a condition for lottery funding.

It is interesting to hear other athletes, the cyclists in particular, saying that being based in Manchester & seeing the work put in by the Gold medalists & the World Champions, sets the standard that they have to meet if they want to aspire to be in the team & be successful.

I wonder if athletics will revisit their decision post these games.

A few names mentioned there that are a little bit 'dodgy' 😬

First pole vault medal to go with first shot putt medal earlier in the week.

3 finalists in the 1500m also I think.

Dina Asher Smith could well have won the 100m and 200m events if she had been fit. She was at least a favourite for a medal. That would have made a huge difference on it’s own but we also had a false start in the men’s 100m and injuries in the men’s 200m and women’s heptathlon from potential medalists. We’ve done ok I think without being great.

It would have been a big ask. She'd have to have beaten her personal best to get a bronze in both events.

She would, but she was in great form leading up to the championship and by all accounts expected to do just that. All of her rivals picked up their performances in the last month or so when she had been injured. Before the injury, she was regularly beating them all.

I really don't think you could call Gemili and Hughes potential medalists. Even if either ran their PB they'd have still finished outside of bronze.

she would’ve got smoked sadly, Elaine Thompson-Herah beat Dina’s personal best in the semi finals, going 80% and then went on to run the second fastest times of all time in the 100m and 200m, she’s a few levels above Dina Asher Smith, that’s just the reality. No shame in that, Elaine Thompson-Herah is now gold medalist in the last two Olympics and officially the second woman fastest of all time. Nobody can compete with her at her best.

That said, she might’ve been able to medal in the 200m but even that might’ve been a tough one.

Still would have needed a personal best in 200m.

The other two Jamaican girls in the 100m showed what they thought of Elaine Thompson-Herah’s performance.

Might be worth looking out for Jodie Williams in the 400m tomorrow. She's been knocking chunks of her times this year and set a PB in the semi. Not as quick as the other lasses in the final, but an outside chance for a podium.
