Tears at the whistle

I was a bit more resigned to it from around the 75th minute, just didn't feel like we were going to score. I was directly in line with the lino for the offside goal and saw his flag immediately, just stayed rooted in my seat while everyone around me jumped up.

It was still the longest walk home afterwards mind. I've lost count of how many long sighs I've done since FT.

Need something to look forward to immediately now though, might use my Wembley money to treat myself.

Strange thing when Coventry scored all my anxiety and stomach churning worry all left my body, I feel a little numb today though. Strange how much football takes a toll on your emotions.
I was the same, I felt better in a way after that goal, it had clearly been coming from the start of the second half so it was good to get it out the way, if that makes sense.

I just mean it didn't click for us and we couldn't put our moves together in the final 3rd like we have done under Carrick.
They stopped us from hitting them on the transition by tripping and shirt pulling. To then quickly reset their shape knowing we were a negligible threat from the resulting set pieces.

I wasn't impressed with the ref last night, who offered no protection to Chuba especially.

Yep they did, but the game allows it so no complaints from me. I do think the ref could have booked some of their players earlier but some refs will and some refs won't, fair play to Coventry.

That is exactly how I felt!!! I have been trying to rationalise why!

When they scored, all the anxiety and worry disappeared - I just 'knew' it wasn't going to happen and accepted it. Our brains are funny things! Almost like the anxiety and worry was my subconscious warning me it wasn't going to happen and when I consciously accepted it - I had balance again! That's my amateur psychology opinion!

Credit to Coventry they turned us over. The brilliant atmosphere and flag waving at the start clearly didn't get to them and they went about it the right way. We looked jaded and if we were still playing now still wouldn't have scored. This in sharp contrast to when we were scoring for fun for weeks at home.

Its a funny old game as Greavsie once said - apart from their keeper who should have been booked much earlier for his time wasting antics which I think spoiled what would have been a good performance for them. These things cost games.

OK some might say its sour grapes but clearly he pushed his luck and got away with it and it sullies the sportsmanship of football imo. Not a good role model for youngsters watching.

I will be rooting for Luton now because of Ben Wilson and also because they beat the 'Seagull Shafters' It would have been too painful to see them get to Wembley and go up.

It doesn't really allow it does it? Strictly speaking if it's done persistently it's a booking and then a sending off. It shouldn't be a viable tactic over 90 mins or two legs.

But I take your point, the way matches are often officiated means teams can get away with it a lot and when they do you need to find ways to deal with it.

It's cheating though. It's clever, but it's still cheating. Same as diving, time wasting and the rest of it.

Not the reason we lost mind but still an annoying minor contributing factor.

(Slightly off topic but it also encourages players to dive and make a meal out of it, because refs usually won't take action otherwise. Maybe we needed to do more of that. Doesn't make for a great game though.)

Yeah this is what I mean, the game allows it because the rules aren't strong enough to stop it. Even with the added time of 8 minutes, they wasted more than that without a doubt. There was 8 subs so that's 4 minutes straight away, so they essentially added 4 minutes for all the play acting, injuries and time wasting. Their keeper taking a yellow card for wasting god knows how long in the last 30 minutes is well worth it to them.

Until the rules are tightened up so that it's an automatic yellow every time you time waste and there's no hestitation from the ref to issue a 2nd yellow for it then you won't hear me complaining about it. My preferred solution is reducing the game to 60 minute match and stopping the clock every time the ball is out of play but I know most people hate that just because "it's American" despite it being clearly the best and most efficient solution.

Coventry knew what they were doing as it was a different player each time i.e. persistent fouling from the team but no particular individual. Ref could have clamped down on it but for most refs success is avoiding controversy and if he'd started booking them in the first half as he should he would have had to dish out red cards in the second half.

I don't usually get that emotional at games but I'll admit I had a bit of a weird moment when Carrick comforted McGree, who was staring at fans in the north stand for ages and I had to fight back the tears.

There was a lad who looked to be in his 30's on the row behind me and he was crying but still singing at the time. That got to me a bit.

I think all of us should be gutted but close to tears or in tears I think I’m too well schooled on all the other disappointments I’ve had with the Boro from yesteryear. I mean losing two cup finals and being relegated in the same season toughened me up not to expect too much from the “mighty Boro’.

Its funny , I've been thinking about this thread and the worst moments as a Boro fan thread and it's made me wonder why I didn't feel that bad on Wednesday and then I was reading about Healey's goal in 97, I was there but don't feel it was a particularly bad moment , it makes me wonder if over the years as a Boro fan I have developed an emotional off on switch, if it looks like something is going to be too painful then it switches off something in my mind and I go into an equivalent to standby, so I end up remembering little about the event. I certainly remember Leeds relegation, and the FA cup final but maybe I expected the worst in both so didn't need the switch to operate, if only I could remember the UEfA cup final, 🤷🏻‍♂️.what happened again?

Yeah but we didn't do it the easy way, we dragged it out into replays and totally congested our fixture list, so when it looked like we were playing as a team we struggled to get through the grind of fixtures.

Feel quite embarrassed now but couldn't hide my emotions at the final whistle last night.

Pretty sure my wife now thinks I have totally lost the plot.
No problem with any of that. But you'll be a bit more hardened to disappointment when you reach your 60's. Believe me!

When it doesnt affect me is the day I will pack in.
It hasn’t happened in 56 years so I guess I’m stuck with it.UTFB.
