Death toll is staggering

Bear, would you be able to establish the number of 1st dose vaccinations given daily along with the cumulative number?

Today's headline analysis:

• 1,564 new deaths within 28 days of a positive test reported in 24-hour period, up from 1,243 yesterday

New records for daily reported deaths and 7-day average for new deaths (which is now over 1,000 per day for the first time).

I'd read that the ZOE app is showing a fall on case rates for the 4th consecutive day. A light on the horizon.

As Bear has already highlighted, if you add the number of deaths registered by 1st January to the number of people we know have died since then (i.e. by date of death), there have now been in excess of 100,000 Covid deaths in the United Kingdom.

Yeah, 3 days of cases in the 45k region, early/ midweek too, it’s ridiculous that it’s a positive sign, just shows you how bad it had got.

Hopefully cases keep coming down and the NHS doesn’t get overwhelmed in the next couple of weeks when the 60k case peak comes, there appears to be little that can be done about the deaths coming in the next 2 weeks, it’s sickening.

The thing is theses death numbers are being archived despite much greater knowledge of the virus, better drugs, better treatment, more resources, more ICU beds, less susceptible people etc. We should have done much, much better than March/April, but I bet we’re not far off doubling where we were, it’s a disgrace.

• 1,248 new deaths within 28 days of a positive test reported in 24-hour period, down from 1,564 yesterday
• 7-day average for new deaths within 28 days of a positive test increases by 1.2% to 1,072 per day, following 7.6% increase yesterday (and 16th consecutive daily increase)

I would treat the slight decrease in the 7-day average for new deaths with extreme caution, as today's figure (which is the 3rd highest on record) is replacing last week's figure, which is itself the 2nd highest on record.

I imagine weekends will always have the highest vaccine figures.
