The first show from an innovative new partnership between less is MORE, a local theatre production company, and Middlesbrough Town Hall launches next week (Monday, Aug 1) with an exciting new Shakespeare adaptation.

With a nod to the open-air origins of the famous Bard, the sounds of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will fill the Courtyard, this time with the Bard of Boro Town Hall.

The partnership was set up after the global pandemic to champion the local theatre sector in Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley region.

Creating opportunities and exposure for professionals and local hobbyists via new productions, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the first of its kind in this area to combine a cast of paid professionals with an amateur theatre company and local dance and performance studios.

David Tuffnell, Artistic Director of less is MORE, said: “It’s really important to us as a production company to invest in local talent and share the message that there are opportunities available to pursue the arts in this region.

“The appetite for enjoying success locally and keeping it in the area is well and truly alive and kicking and it’s vital that we continue the work that has started.”

The famous story of love, magic and trickery includes a twist in the tale as the action moves to 1940s wartime Middlesbrough, with the characters dressed in pin curls, trouser suits and ‘oxfords’.

The cast includes:
  • Angela Rose as Titania
  • Jamie Brown as Oberon
  • Sean Kenney as Bottom
  • Alice Faith as Puck
  • Kate Drummond as Helena
  • Sasha Snowdon as Hermia
  • Aaron Smith as Lysander
  • Lewis Ralston as Demetrius
Working alongside the actors are Durham Shakespeare Group, and the fairies are from Middlesbrough-based LCM Studios.

Councillor Stephen Hill, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Culture & Communities, said: “The partnership between less is MORE and the Town Hall is such an exciting opportunity to be real innovators in a growing creative sector.
“The general feeling right now is that Middlesbrough’s cultural offering is on the up and this is another example of how we’re leading the way.

“Make sure you’ve got your tickets for A Midsummer Night’s Dream so that you can say you were there – people will be talking about this and you definitely want to be a part of it!”

· A Midsummer Night’s Dream is playing at Middlesbrough Town Hall from Monday, August 1 to Wednesday, August 3.

Tickets are £12 for adults and £10 for students and children plus a 50p booking fee.
