What channel's that on?To be fair the Whitby regatta boat race is a closed shop as well Friendship vs Fisherlads, but no-one complains that's elistist.
*although for some reason Scarborough have sent crews up recently, but they aren't allowed to win the trophy
It is for Oxbridge. Check out the recent Chancellors. And Spitting Image.Education is now "elitism" apparently. Is this why all the Gazette journalists are thick as pigsh!t?
Institutions that actively perpetuate the worst excesses of the class system.I imagine Zero. And it is, in effect, a symbol of British tradition and a sporting event between two venerable British institutions.
I know it's de riguer to be a class warrior on this site, and fine. But the boat race? Really?Institutions that actively perpetuate the worst excesses of the class system.
Yes really. Why would you make a particular exception for this cynosure of snobbery?I know it's de riguer to be a class warrior on this site, and fine. But the boat race? Really?

you imagine wrong. The BBC do pay for it.I imagine Zero. And it is, in effect, a symbol of British tradition and a sporting event between two venerable British institutions.
Because it's a great day out, a great sporting competition and a great tradition. Like I said, I totally get it, this place is a haven for class warfare, always has been. It's just a strange targetYes really. Why would you make a particular exception for this cynosure of snobbery?
in your view.Because it's a great day out, a great sporting competition and a great tradition. Like I said, I totally get it, this place is a haven for class warfare, always has been. It's just a strange target
I can't find any evidence of this? {Paying for the boat race itself that is) I imagine they pay for the COVERAGE? Which makes it the same as every single program on the BBC? I find tennis dull and elitist. Yet I understand MY taxes also go on showing a tennis tournament every summer?you imagine wrong. The BBC do pay for it.
In the view of 10 million people who either attend or watch.in your view.
An alternative one is that it's a symbol of rich trust fund blue blood old etonian kids moving on to their coveted world of creating life long relationships to ensure their rise to the top, built on their foundation of personal family wealth.
I go with this view rather than yours, but hey each to their own.
I'm sure you are aware that is exactly what I meant.I can't find any evidence of this? {Paying for the boat race itself that is) I imagine they pay for the COVERAGE?
I'm not a class warrior ST. Before I left the City most of my friends had been through the public/private school, Oxbridge (or at least Russell League) route. I did, hopefully, allow them to see that they were genuinely fortunate and appreciate that lack of opportunity did not equate to lack of intelligence or high moral standards. Often the reverse.Because it's a great day out, a great sporting competition and a great tradition. Like I said, I totally get it, this place is a haven for class warfare, always has been. I wasn't know. Because you seemed to be upset about it. So I presumed it wasn't just for the coverage, which is obvious. So, jsut to be clear, they don't PAY for the boat race.I'm sure you are aware that is exactly what I meant.
If you don't know how google works I can provide a link where the BBC signed a 7 year deal for coverage of the boat race. It wasn't signed for free.

It's a boat race? They aren't driving their ferraris around council estate. You claim not to be a class warrior yet think a few people rowing is an overt display of wealth and privilege?I'm not a class warrior ST. That does not prevent me from disliking the overt display of wealth and privilege.
de rigueur (he said snobbishly)I know it's de riguer to be a class warrior on this site, and fine. But the boat race? Really?
I'm not upset about anything, I merely stated my viewpoint, it's a messageboard, that's what people do.I wasn't know. Because you seemed to be upset about it. So I presumed it wasn't just for the coverage, which is obvious. So, jsut to be clear, they don't PAY for the boat race.
They pay for the coverage. Ergo they pay for the & million people who watch? That's kind of how TV works mate. You pay for things and they get views. If they don't, you don't pay for them
