The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Wooo weeee.. that felt like an extra kick in the goolies. We made changes.. we dropped our star man.. that’ll teach em!

Stuck with the majority of our defence because.. that’s what we’re stuck with.

I thought we looked ok.. we lacked that bit of spark but we looked ok.

Reasons to be cheerful? (The Good)

Erm.. Dijksteel was really good when he came on after 59 minutes. Burgzorg was good when he came on in the 2nd half.. Iling Junior looked alright on 67 minutes.. would have taken Conway off myself and pushed Burgzorg up top.

Starters? I liked Aiden Morris.. oh there was much more communication between our players a noticeable change.. that was good. Neto Borges looked very tidy. Rav Van Den Berg always looks tidy.. classy. Dan Barlaser looked fine man.. gets lots of stick but he looked fine. Morgan Whittaker.. I like him a lot.. he’s no Isaiah Jones but he’s a canny player.

The Bad..

Sorry to say it but Luke Ayling looks goosed at right back. I think right back has been an issue for a long time now and as much as there is a big love in for Kieran Scott waving his magic wand and making us into the most profitable stepping stone on the championship.. leaving the transfer window with holes left in the squad is not a good look. He’s got lists of players for every position for every eventually.. all that fit our model young hungry players with a high resale potential.

Not at right back tho.. or defensive midfield.. or central defence. Best just make sure we register Bangura.. to pad our squad list.. and make sure we have Sol Brynn registered even though he won’t be back until next season.. if Darragh Lenihan doesn’t play a part this season that’s FOUR spaces in our squad that has major problems in at least THREE positions.

Ihannacho.. the Yannick Bolasie comparison was perhaps too complimentary. £25k a week? Whiffs of Mido and Gestede. Big name.. doesn’t seem to fit ‘the project’ Last minute alternative to Strelec? Mind you Finn Azaz didn’t look to hot when he came on either.. maybe there’s something in the water?

The Ugly..

Resting beer shyt face.. can’t be doing with it. If Carrick goes it’s on Kieron Scott.. you can’t coach players into existence. He’s won his season.. champagne all round!

Dijksteel—Fry—RVDB—Borges

Whittaker———————Illing Jr
———-Forss—Burgzorg———

We’ve got a team in there somewhere.

Not sure about the rest tho

Beka Beka anyone?

It was awful. All the hallmarks of a manager struggling, desperately trying to find something by introducing head-scratching changes. Well I suppose I wanted him to change.

First four minutes we looked ok then Watford grew into it and dominated the first half. Mind they were so bad they had two great chances that didn’t even end up with shots on target.

2nd half huff n puff. Sitter for RVDB, missed it.

Carrick will not be manager next season. Just sliding down the league until then

Bringing Burgzorg on wasn’t a head scratcher and neither was Dijksteel.

The fact that they both didn’t start was tho.

I don’t want to jump on the bandwagon of bashing Barlaser as everyone else has already done it over and over, but he wasn’t ‘fine’.

He let the ball roll under his foot, he misplaced simple passes, and as usual couldn’t tackle or win the ball. That’s not ‘fine’ when playing centre mid in a game of yesterday’s magnitude.

I mean.. fine isn’t good.

If your in a restaurant and someone asks you how your food is and you say ‘fine’

It probably isn’t.

Not having a left sided player in front of Borges was bizarre and stupid .
Hackney was supposed to be there ? NO .

Ailing ——-VDB —Ed ————Borges
—Whittaker—-Morris-Barlaser

Ian Nacho ——-Conway
It looked lop sided from the 1st 10 minutes ,
Gaping hole in front of Borges , Watford right wing back un marked and un challenged .
So obvious I was scratching my head .
School boys don’t get set up like this .
Hackney was a star for England at DM , so why play him in every position but this ?

Barlaser, as newy says was OK yesteryear. Didn't do anything particularly great. A couple of passes early on that were progressive. We have seen enough of him to know his strengths and weaknesses and he isn't really who you would want in a battle.
I thought azaz was ok when he came on. Did create a chance and have one shot himself, which was about on par for the team performance, but again not who you want in a battle.

Ayling was very poor again. Nacho, I hope he improves same with Illing Jr.

Conway, I get he is just back from injury but he was poor too.

4 players earned their corn. Morris, VDB, Travers and borges. The rest were a bit meh.

Some fight in the second half but too little too late.

In isolation it was an ok performance. It wouldn't stand out this season against other lacklustre displays, however, on the back of our last game it adds some context. Whoever we had on the pitch should have been bustin' a gut to win every ball, every challenge and every tackle. That they didn't says something, just not sure what.

As I've said somewhere else ...

If you are going to attempt to battle your way into the playoffs
It won't happen with a front four containing Whittaker, Azaz and Iheanacho ..
They just won't do enough battling without the ball

Certainly wasn’t the worst home performance, Bristol City and Blackburn much worse. Agree it’s in the context of our poor run, which Carrick and the players don’t seem to be able do anything about. Particularly frustrating is that our January signings have made us poorer too. Maybe I have been too harsh on Carrick, but it’s too late to change the players and it feels as though something has to change before four defeats in a row become five, six and seven and we start looking over our shoulders at Portsmouth and Plymouth.

There are other ways to get promoted from this division than blood and thunder, but you do need to be able to battle when the chips are down.

The players did show a little fire in the second half but that just makes the flip side all the more frustrating.

Completely agree.
We're never going to be the Luton that went up, but you do have to really graft, scrap, chase and harass .. from the front.
