It's similar in terms of its set after something has ravaged the planet but it's different to zombies, it's a fungal infection which changes people.
The infected aren't the slow shuffling "never really in danger unless you get backed into a corner" type and it's a much smaller "main cast" bass rather than the big survivor group that walking dead always focuses on.
Last of us I presume will be bigger budget than AMC gave walking dead. Initially walking dead was high budget in the first season, they were then told they had to reduce the amount of zombies and that's why seasons always had a very slow start and middle and then everything would hit the fan end of season.
A quick google says walking dead was $3.5m per episode season 1 which amc then reduced to $2.75m per episode for season 2. Reports suggest last of us budget is $10-15m per episode which means season one cost more than each of the first 5 seasons of game of thrones.
If anyone likes Chernobyl, it's the same writer that did that who has worked with Druckmann, who led the development of the games.
