The Last of Us TV Show

I had been looking forward to the bit from the game where they have to push the pick-up truck from Bill's to get it started, so this episode was not what I was expecting! But I thought it was really well done and I'm now wondering how else the storyline may change as the series develops.

I've just started playing throught TLOU2 - only completed it once in 2020 - and I'd forgotten just how brutal that game is from start to finish. I wonder how audiences will react to that when it comes out.

Another top notch episode, fantastic story telling and being used to build up backstory the game didn't have.

The fact that the radio in the first episode wasn't playing 80's music because there was danger, just the reality that it was because they both died and never reset the computer. Little nuggets of detail like this are brilliant.

As someone who hadn’t played the games and only became aware of the shows because of Graeme Souness’ reaction to Jamie Redknapp talking about it during Ford Super Sunday, I did enjoy episode 3 but I think talk of it being the “best hour of TV in history” is fairly OTT. I mean it was good, but hyping it up like that helps no one.

It's obviously not going to be *everyone's* 'best hour of tv' but it seems a lot of people agree with the reviewers going off these tweets:

It's not mine either, but it was pretty good!

Well yeah I thought it was pretty good.

But claiming it is the best hour of TV ever is literally like saying Farrow & Ball have just released the best ever colour of paint in the history of art. I mean it’s an absolutely wildly subjective claim that it so wild it isn’t worth saying. In my opinion anyway.

I’d actually say I liked episode 2 better personally.

I am into it though. I just worry about it getting overhyped too quickly.

I don't get referring to people's hype, you either enjoy it or you don't, whether other people like it or not is pretty irrelevant.

The game was one of the best ever made, which pretty much is universally agreed upon. This series has to live up to that standard and so far it is, which means it's getting reviews to match the game.

There will be deviations from the game, they have already stated that and they are doing it to build backstories to characters that just isn't possible in a game, which is the meaning behind ep3.

Ok, but as someone who doesn’t play games and had no expectations whatsoever, I am judging it purely as a TV series. So far, it’s good, and I thought TWD was amazing this far in also. I have also thought other series are really good when only a few episodes in.

I think “you either enjoy it or you don’t” is a bit binary! What about if you just think it’s pretty good but not the best hour in TV history??

Horses for courses, but I just think hyping it up like that only serves to damage it in the long run. Some people said Avatar was the best film ever when it came out, literally no one says that now. In fact I don’t even know anyone whose bothered to watch the sequel. Hype is one thing but some of the stuff I’ve read about this so far is bordering on hysteria and in my opinion that isn’t a good thing. Just my opinion, I’m not saying those hyping it up too much should be put in prison.

Maybe just a £50 on the spot fine would do. I’m a fair man. 😁😉

For me it probably was one of the best hours of tv. If you take that approach you can't say anything is good. Best goal ever, someone has scored a better goal, best player ever, another player is better, best film ever and so on...

The games are 10 years old and the show as been on development since the initial film version planned since 2014. It's not going to get hyped up too quickly because it has zero chance of failure.

Disagree about avatar, it has a huge fan base that are avid about the movie. People said avatar 2 would flop as no one cared anymore and You're saying you don't know anyone bothered about the sequel yet it's the #4 grossing movie of all time and climbing, about to overtake titanic, and will only be behind original Avatar and Avengers and game.

Because you don't know people that like it doesn't mean it isn't hugely popular with massive fan bases that are enjoying it. My girlfriend hasn't played the games and this is currently her favourite show in years.

I say loads of stuff is good. I’d say this show is good!

But you also said no one wants to see the #4 highest grossing movie of all time 😂
Well I didn’t I just said I didn’t know anyone who’d bothered to watch it because the mainstream hysteria about Avatar came and went in about 3 months over a decade ago.

Highest grossing is a bit misleading. Let’s see if Avatar 2 is voted for in any of those “best movie ever” polls in ten years time.

See that's what I mean, the mainstream hysteria over avatar didn't come and go in 3 months, avatar spent 34 weeks in cinemas which is fairly unprecedented and for a few years drove cinema and home television behaviour & technology. It doesn't have to top best movie ever polls to be a great film. You're rewriting history.

Ha my point was literally that it wasn’t the greatest film ever as many initially claimed. I completely agree with you that films/shows don’t have to be the best films/shows ever to simply be great. You’re agreeing with me.

You seem to be taking it that me criticising the journalistic hype means I’m saying it’s crap, I’m categorically not saying that. I’d say it’s 8/10 so far, very good first 3 episodes.

It is the greatest film ever to fans of the franchise, and it has a huge fan base hence being the #4 and soon to be #3 highest grossing movie of all time.

It's not the greatest film ever to people that don't like it, but it will be to a lot of people that do.

This was the greatest hour of tv to people that are heavily into the tv show and game. You're saying not to say things like that because it overhypes it. I disagree, everyone has different tastes. But it's literally people enjoying the things that they enjoy, after they've waited 10 years to see it.

I've not said you're saying it is crap once. I'm saying let people enjoy things.

I am letting them. I’m not wielding an axe in the street hunting down TV critics who’ve (in my opinion) over praised the third episode. If I had the power to stop people enjoying things I’d go after fans of Newcastle United, not lovers of the Last of Us (a show I too am indeed enjoying!).

That could be said about any hour on tv, as everything is subjective

But to counter that people said the red wedding in the GOT was the most shocking moment of tv and that opinion has held I’d say

Exactly. I think it’s the sort of statement that just isn’t worth making. Maybe “my favourite hour of TV” would be language I could embrace more, but TV critics often don’t want to put themselves at the same level as everybody else.
