Its Play-Off Semi - Final Time>>>>>>

Apparently Coventry fans have been letting off fireworks outside Boro`s hotel! Well its kind of them to pay us such respect - but today is going to be tough and the only respect we have is self-respect. We cant afford to let our guard down. We`ve had a foretaste of Coventry`s style of play and their main threats. We know Gyokeres is one big unit and a real threat. Coventry have quality all over the park and they had clearly done their home-work on us before the last League game of the season. But they`ve had their day. Now we step up a gear and take it to them. Its in our own hands.

Whatever is happening elsewhere, there`s no doubt the team will be fully focused on ourselves and playing at our best. Results elsewhere dont matter. Its a semi-final and this is the first half.

Its serious business now: every pass, every shot, every foul, every breath we take - we`l be watching Boro and knowing we can do the job. Its a sell-out at Cov and our fans will be making one hell of a din to fire up the lads.

We`ve got to save our fireworks until we lift the trophy at Wembley.

Come on lads.

Up The Mighty Boro!

'A few surprises' - Coventry City boss drops tactical hint ahead of big play-off test with Middlesbrough

Coventry City play-off news from CoventryLive as the Sky Blues prepare to face Middlesbrough in Sunday's semi-final first leg play-off clash with Middlesbrough

Coventry City manager Mark Robins

Coventry City manager Mark Robins is ready for the tactical challenge faced by a two-legged play-off semi-final

Mark Robins has revealed that Coventry City fans can expect a few “surprises” in Sunday’s big play-off semi-final opener against Middlesbrough.

The double header clash with Boro will see the two Championship sides battling it out over two legs, home and away, for a place in the final at Wembley Stadium against either Luton Town or Sunderland, who play their semi-final first leg on Saturday afternoon (5.30pm).

The Sky Blues will be looking to capitalise on their home advantage, playing in front of a sell-out crowd at the CBS Arena, all of whom will be City fans bar 2,000 away supporters travelling down from Teesside.

It should make for a fascinating tactical contest between the two managers. Will Michael Carrick, for instance, take a cagey approach to the first leg, attempt to soak up the pressure, stifle Coventry ’s attacking game and hit them on the counter attack in the hope of getting at least a draw to take back to the Riverside next Wednesday night when he will have the full force of his home support behind his team? Alternatively, he could go for it from the off and go all out to overrun the Sky Blues from the first whistle and attempt to turn the crowd. Either way, navigating two games will be a very different approach to a one-off match, particularly with so much at stake.

Asked about the tactical challenge and whether he’ll be trying to second guess what Carrick will do with all the variables at play, Robins said: “I am sure they will all come into my mind but from my point of view you prepare the way you have all season. I think you can over think things, but ultimately it’s down to how prepared the players are and then trying to be calm in the moment and play their game.

“It’s exciting and I am sure the adrenaline will be pumping through everyone, including the supporters, but it is only another game. From my point of view we’ll prepare as normal.”

Asked how different he thinks Boro will be from Monday’s 1-1 draw at their place, the manager said: “I honestly don’t know because there are different ways of going about games. Obviously there’s a lot of hype around these games and it’s how people handle them. We talk about building up an occasion and the players are really positive. You have just got to embrace it because it’s a brilliant opportunity, that’s for sure.

“It’s just another game, and having played them on Monday, this Sunday and next Wednesday it’s a triple header in a short space of time and we’ll obviously know a lot more about each other as the games go on. But for me, it’s just about planning and preparing as we have all season and going out and playing the game.”

He added: “I think they are a good side. They will be confident, and rightly so because they have some good players. We have just faced off at their place. This is a different game.

“We’ll build up to is the same as we always have. There will be a few surprises, I think.”

Whoever said the play off isn’t a lottery was just wrong - just one bad day at the office and our season is over. Sheff Wed found that out. Fingers and toes crossed we are on it at lunchtime today.
100% it's a lottery. You could go in on sh*t hot form but implode. You could also go in on awful form but have a good day at the office.

We know we can get promoted because we have the ability in the team, it's just about whether we can hold our nerve and rise to the occasion.

Personally I'd take a draw today then I couldn't see past a boro win at the riverside. But if we go out there and stuff them it would be a thing of beauty.

Michael Carrick

"We know what we have to do."

Pragmatic as ever: Michael Carrick says the team have trained hard all week and hes aware of how tough its going to be at Coventry. "Its going to be a tough challenge against a good team". Carrick made it crystal clear the focus is on the next three games: "we know whats at stake". "I`m sure they`l be momentum swings throughout the game that we`ve got to deal with, and thats the beauty of the play-offs. Its probably who deals with that best comes out on top". Today "is a clean slate and we start all over again. We can take confidence [from] how we have performed over the season.....how much we`ve improved....and [knowing] what we`re capable of."

Coventry "...are on a really good run. They`ve had a fantastic season". But, for Carrick that`s history: "Whatever`s happened has happened" he added with a smile. "Points on the table are irrelevant. Positions in the table are irrelevant. Its [just] two games to see who goes through. Its as simple as that." He was sked what he thought Coventry had learnt from their recent league game: "Its very difficult for me to say what they are going to do [!] Both teams will look at the game and try to assess what went well and what did`nt. Coming off the back of it- [playing] three times in a row is part of learning and adapting quickly." In term of league form, Carrick believes "that goes out the window". "Its knock-out football and whatever`s gone becomes irrelevant". Given his vast experience at the highest levels of the international game, he`s probably the best equipped Coach in the Championship to make that comment and knows exactly what that means. Every one of the next three games is a cup final.

Dangling carrots in front of the lads to do better and get over the line?
"I`l be honest. I dont need to dangle any carrots in this situation. We all know what`s ...at stake. I`m there to support them They know that".

The future?

"Lets not get ahead of ourselves.....before that we`ve got to get through to the final. [Promotion] would mean everything, its what we`re here for and trying to achieve, but we`ve got to take it step by step. There`s big obstacles in front of us that we`ve got to overcome. we`re not looking too far ahead by any stretch." "I`ve got these two games first and then there`s another one after that yet, so the Premier League is still a distance away. Its about a strong Coventry team I`m thinking about most at the moment".

Different preparation for today`s game?

"Not really. No." The players need to be ready. The coaching staff "...have got a feeling of what the [players] need from us to help them be ready. So...its definitely not a case of [because we`re here] lets have a whole new weeks training, or try something completely different."

Does Carrick think we are the best team and should go up?
Nah, it would be very wrong of me to say that. I believe in my players 100%. I trust them totally and over-the-moon with the squad we have......There`s no way I`m saying we have better players and are the better team". "We`ve got real threats and can cause real problems...but its about what happens on the night".

Did Carrick want to take Boro into the play-offs when he got here?

"I didnt have any real targets or goals...it was about trying to improve and develop the team. Seeing where it took us. In the back of your mind there`s always that me, kind of being....what I am. Trying to be as good as you can be....That`s me sitting as a Coach .....and passing [knowledge] on to the players. See where you end up.

Fans?
He was as enthusiastic as always about the fans and the [Team`s] impact of winning games and achievements on the town. That connection with the fans... "1ve said it from day one and its grown all the time. To see the children coming up to me in the street...and chasing me on bikes when I`m trying to go for a run.....that energy and excitement they`ve got is fantastic to see. Its how it should be".

A lottery suggests you have no control over what happens, but that's not the case. We are in the same position as any team in a semi final of a competition, be that Champions league, World Cup , Fa cup or play offs.
Go out and prove you're the best team , no excuses no regrets.

Being nervous is probably a good thing. The lads will thrive on it. So long as we dont become scared and make mistakes. We`ve got players in our squad who have been engaged in big occasions - cup finals, the World Cup, promotion, relegation and more besides. we should have the steel to bring back a good result today and look forward to the second leg.(y)

Exactly Carricks words. Its in our own hands. Its not like rolling a dice or waiting for our number to come up. Its an excuse if we lose and one the media like to quote ad infinitum. We know what to expect and what we have to do to overcome the obstacles and deal with Coventry`s threats(y)

Difficult to call today. We don't need to win today.

I do think that trying to get your team to play in a different way may be dangerous. Whilst Carrick has played in lots of two tie competitions I think he will go to win the game.

We are a better team than Coventry, but not by a huge margin. If we score first we may go on to put the tie to bed. If we concede first Carrick may be tempted to tighten things up a bit. I how he doesn't.

We will know more once we see the team.

I’m starting to think those that say the play offs are a lottery lack the mental fortitude for the journey ahead. In any sport luck will play a part on any given day, but the most successful players/teams don’t go into a semifinal or final thinking it’s a lottery. They have an unwavering belief in their ability to win, through a combination of superior fitness, ability and preparation. That doesn’t mean the best team/player always wins, but they win more often than they lose.

That’s where we are folks. IMO we are the best team in the playoffs. We may need a little luck to get the job done, but you also make your own luck by being the best you can be. I don’t think any team will be better prepared than we are and I have complete faith in Michael Carrick to guide us to the promised land. Bring on Coventry and UTB! 😁
