THE FLYING DUTCHMAN

Anfernee “Anf” Dijksteel, is starting to get a reputation for scoring crucial goals. Having worn the famous red n white for five seasons, our right back had never scored a senior goal in League or Cup for Boro – until that 3-0 victory against Leeds at Elland Road in the Caraboa Cup, way back on a warm night in mid-August. Weaving past Leeds defenders like they weren’t there, picking his spot and knocking it past sprawling Leeds goalkeeper “Darlo”. It broke the deadlock that night and set us up for an emphatic win!

Dijksteel scores his first Boro goal against Leeds at Elland Road in the Caraboa Cup in August!

It seemed like a repeat on Friday night, with his spectacular goal against Burnley at a soaked Turf Moor. It looked like he'd tripped, but somehow his right foot directed the ball past the on-coming goalie. He was asked if Carrick "tells" him to get “forward” up the pitch ?:

Yes. Especially on the outside, when I get the ball past the winger. That's one of my better attributes, to run forward and try to find [our] number ten striker.

"The boys" celebrate Anfernee`s goal, but the Burnley ball-boy doesn't look too happy!

"Anf" certainly did a job against a Burnley side with the meanest defence in the league. What was our right back doing just outside the Burnley area? That pinpoint pass from Dan Barlaser, released him on the right, where he appeared to trip, but managed to flick it into the empty net past the oncoming goalie!

I know when I scored [from] probably one of the best passes to me. He [Barlaser] saw a gap…….and I tried thinking, and I didn’t know where it would fall. When it went in, I was surprised.

Overall, Dijksteel thought it was “a good game to watch”, but “really tough” for our defence. They certainly didn’t let up after we scored: it's so unusual for a Scott Parker side to concede a goal at home!

1733821156940.png
Scott Parker bemoaned missed chances, claiming Burnley had been the "better side".

"They scored a goal against the run of play, and that was probably down to us a little bit. Certainly, it's something we need to look at in that we gifted that a little bit in terms of the way we positioned ourselves."

They have now only conceded seven goals in total in the Championship! Chris Wilder`s Sheffield United come second with eleven conceded!

Dieng.png

[screengrab.skysports.youtube]
Was Dieng too far off his line for the Burnley equaliser?

Arguably, Dieng could have been better-placed to stop Connor Roberts shot from 25 yards out. We know the weather conditions weren't ideal, with a swirling wind in our faces, but could he have stayed closer to his line to try and prevent the Burnley equaliser?

"Disappointed" at Burnley Result:

1733819816228.png
Carrick believes we could have beaten Burnley.

Michael Carrick, appeared disappointed after the game, especially with the two or three chances we had in the second half to put the game to bed and take all three points.

It's probably a good sign we’re slightly disappointed, to be honest: that we haven't ended up winning the game.

It was a tight game. We've played probably better in certain spells and certain moments than in other games, for sure, with the quality of the football.

They are a good team that close certain spaces down. It was a good game, a good battle against two good teams. In the end, there was a point. Nice that we are disappointed [because] it shows where we're at, at the moment.

doak hackney.png

[screengrab:efl.youtube]
Ben Doak and Hayden Hackney worked hard against a tough Burnley side.

Carrick insisted the “game” plan wasn't changed, in spite of the inclement weather. The wind and persistent rain made it “difficult” at times, but this is what Championship football looks like in Winter in England. We can expect it to be cold, wet, and windy, and pitches won't always be like the billiard table at The Riverside. It's worth remembering that Carrick has played hundreds of games in all kinds of conditions as a top-class Midfielder, adapting to those conditions as an individual in a team, and now as a manager. It's unlikely he will take any excuses from his current crop of charges:

[The Weather] Doesn't change the game plan at all, it obviously becomes more difficult to try and play. You can see [the ball] swaying. You can see it drop thirty yards away from where you think it's gonna be in the air. So we tried to keep the ball on the ground as much as we can.

For Carrick, we “defended well”, “stuck together” and we showed we can compete with anyone in this league. We breached their solid defence and could have taken all three points: A perfect example was George Edmundson’s header, which fizzed just past the outside of the left-hand post.

edmundson.png

[screengrab:efl.youtube]
Edmundson knew he had missed a chance to put us ahead.

In spite of everything, our form is on the up, and it appears the magic “corner” is being turned. We mustn't kick ourselves for too long at not winning on a filthy night in East Lancashire. We are in the “top six”, which two months ago, seemed a far away dream. The poor start to the season is behind us, and it feels this maybe the real start of our charge towards promotion. We've had many false dawns, but against Burnley, we showed why we are where we are, and just what we need to do, to turn nights like that into three points, not just one.

I think this could be another high scoring cracker of a game. Leeds always kick off at a high tempo, we will need to weather the storm for the first 15 minutes and hope for a referee who isn’t easily intimidated if possible. Ben Toner is in charge, this will be one of his highest profile games as ref. I think the first goal is crucial tonight. I see another draw 2-2 if it is 11v11 but this game likes a red card over the years.

[screengrab.MFC.youtube]

I think over the course of the season, we've been building for some time now to keep striving to be towards the top of the table…...”

In his most recent media conference, Michael Carrick repeated what he has said many times before: that the squad matters as much as individual players. He believes they are good enough and that players can step up to the plate when needed. Every player has their opportunity, to showcase where they are at. Good examples are Dijksteel and Dael [Fry], who have both been ready to take their chance when the opportunity arises. Neither has had much game time, for one reason or another, but have been excellent in their recent appearances. Dael Fry is a different type of player to Matt Clarke and able to offer a different dimension in defence. Anfernee has his own style and approach, and during the summer it was rumoured his future might lie elsewhere. Clearly, Carrick knows from seeing him in training, his effort and his determination, he has a future in his squad.
Brynn leeds.png
[Screengrab.efl.youtube]
Sol Brynn started in goal in the Cup tie at Elland Road, back in August.

Carrick was asked about Sol Brynn, who has shown in recent games he is more than capable of filling Sonny Dieng`s boots in his absence. Sol has a different style, [in my opinion] a more assertive player, who urges defenders forward. He appears to prefer pinging the ball out to the wings and those further forward. Yes, he's conceded goals, but he appears more in control of his area and [for me] always looks alert and aware of the dangers from the opposition, when laying off the ball to defenders.

Carrick had this to say:

Sol [has] played really well, and we know what Sol's capable of doing. He's on a kind of trajectory in his career and establishing himself and taking the next step. But with the squad's total players…...we just got to choose the right ones for the right games.

Ben Doak:

[I`m] quite calm about it to be honest. No drama! Ben's happy he's doing well, we're happy. He's in a good place; you can see in his body language, his demeanour [that] he's happy. He keeps working hard, and he's enjoying it here, …….so as long as that carries on we're all good.
doak interview.png
[Screengrab.sky.youtube]
Ben Doak told Sky Sports interviewer he was enjoying his football at Middlesbrough!

Carrick continued:

He's had a big impact for sure since he's been here. We enjoy having him here, he's a great character, he wants to do well, he wants to improve and so far, it's been a really, really good fit for all of us!

The race to stay in the Championship top six:

I don't get too caught [in] who's running away with it who's not, [and] who's around us. We kind of know where we're at without talking about……...it's just about putting the performances together really and keep pushing and improving.

I think over the course of the season, we've been building for some time now to keep striving to be towards the top of the table and challenging. That comes through performances, and the boys get Confidence from that.

[I`ve] said sometimes, it's not the result……..it's a performance that you can take a lot from and build on.

Leeds:

Daniel Farke, listening to wise words from Michael Carrick, after his team's 3-0 Cup defeat.
[It might make a good caption competition?!]

Carrick will be making “tough” decisions about who fits into the starting line-up against the team which has trying to swop top-spot with Sheffield United over the last weeks. With us preventing Burnley from jumping into top place on Friday, we go into the second consecutive away game within a matter of days:

It's the next game, it's a tough place again. We know what Leeds are, they are a good team [with] some very good players, so we take some confidence from tonight, in the spell that we're having, and keep trying to improve.

Carricks Kids are Boro fans!

Boro Fans at Leeds

Michael has always made clear the importance of the connection between the players and the fans. Carrick stressed again on Monday, in his Media Conference, that the players feed off the positive energy emanating from the stands. We fill our away allocations within days and frequently out-sing and make more noise than the home fans. Leeds fans tend to make a lot of noise, but their repertoire is rather limited: after all, you can only sing "marching on together" for so long........!

carrick stands 1.png
[Manchester Evening News]
Carrick, himself, is not averse to joining fans in the stands, and has been spotted, on odd occasions, in the away end…….
Early on, in 2022, he sat amongst Manchester United fans at Goodison Park!
[Before he signed for the Boro....of course!]

So it's no different for his son Jacey, and daughter Louise:

Carrick smiled at reporters:

I've told you before. My son and my daughter, they've been to many games in the away end, and they love it, can't get enough of it!
(y)

All we need tonight is three more points to start bridging that gap to fourth place. It's not impossible, or even improbable. Leeds comfortably beat Derby County last time out, but were beaten by Blackburn Rovers 1-0 at Ewood Park only the week before. It's going to be a cracking atmosphere.

We can do this.

Come On Boro.

Id take a draw right now.
It all depends on performance on what I would accept. If we are outplayed or ride or luck then yup 1 point will be good. If we treat them a new one and only draw we will ask be disappointed.

We have to go into every game knowing, if we are at our best we will win.

Daniel Farke

Notes from his press conference for tonight's game. [Edited and abridged].

"Many teams come to Elland Road in order to try to park the bus".

At his recent Press Conference, Farke spoke extensively about the number of injuries he has to a number of key players and how that may impact upon his ability to manage through the busy December and January period.

Leeds home cup defeat to Boro:
I want to put that one right. That was the poor performance of the season so far. But I wouldn't compare this [game] because it was completely different line-ups.

Combatting Middlesbrough's Attacking Style:
[With] Middlesbrough, if you are not spot on, they are really good and especially if you can't control their offensive game, then you have a problem. [They're] a really good side, and you have to be rock solid, in terms of your defending behaviour against them.

Scoring Goals and On The Counter-Attack:
In general, their approach is always also to attack games, to score many goals. That's what they've shown in the recent weeks. They had many games, where they scored many goals, but it also depends on the level of the opponent. When I judge the first half away at Burnley, [they] also had to defend a lot and went a bit more for the counter-attack, and they have also dangerous players in the counter-attack. I think obviously many teams come to Ellen Road in order to try the to park the bus. *

Experience and good performance at Burnley:

I think they are respectful. They have an experienced manager with Michael [Carrick] and also many experienced players. They know they have to be at their best, and to be there [at Burnley] was a really good performance.

Tonight:
They also have the confidence they are a good side [and] that, if they are at their best, and they have a chance........... I think they will travel in this mindset.

*For him, Boro are always looking for ways to score and beat their opponents. It appears that he doesn't think we will just turn up to "park the bus"!

Hmmm, think this is different to Burnley. They have won last 7 league on the trot at home scoring 2 goals 4 times and 3 goals - 3 times , keeping six clean sheets , and only conceding 1 goal to Watford. So just like in cup , great organised team defending for us needed in first half and prob not seeing much of the ball, and go for the break mometns in the 2nd. This with much difficulty in this fixture for us I see. (Sorry been watching the SW stuff on tv )

Most of the YouTube score predictors are going for a draw or a 1-0 Leeds win.

I think it'll be a high scoring game but we'll probably lose. 4-3 maybe.

We are 5.4 to win tonight, 9/2 for the old gadgets.

Don't often have a bet on us because there is seldom value. It's easy to argue that the price is value tonight.
