I was looking through this:
https://www.transferleague.co.uk/middlesbrough/english-football-teams/middlesbrough-transfers
A quick glance over the figures and a few things come to light:
1 - the players we pay a lot for leave after just 1 or 2 seasons eg Flint, Braithwaite, Traore, De Roon, Bamford, Rhodes... the list goes on
Hardly the making of a well-run club with a team of settled players is it?
2 - Since the £12m disaster in 2007 that was Alfonso Alves - 12 years ago - we have only paid more for a player once since (Assombalonga, £15m in 2017)
In other words, Alves burnt Gibson's fingers. Once bitten twice shy. Apart from the purchase of Britt, he's cut this club according to its cloth. Great if you're running a business, but is that the right way to run a football club in this day and age?
3 - Net spend the past 2 seasons is about £35m profit. The preceding seasons were not huge losses by any stretch.
Where has all the money gone?
Put the above 3 points together and only one conclusion can be drawn: we have a chairman who just doesn't want to invest in the club any more.
