The way this club is run: transfers and money

I was looking through this:

https://www.transferleague.co.uk/middlesbrough/english-football-teams/middlesbrough-transfers

A quick glance over the figures and a few things come to light:

1 - the players we pay a lot for leave after just 1 or 2 seasons eg Flint, Braithwaite, Traore, De Roon, Bamford, Rhodes... the list goes on

Hardly the making of a well-run club with a team of settled players is it?

2 - Since the £12m disaster in 2007 that was Alfonso Alves - 12 years ago - we have only paid more for a player once since (Assombalonga, £15m in 2017)

In other words, Alves burnt Gibson's fingers. Once bitten twice shy. Apart from the purchase of Britt, he's cut this club according to its cloth. Great if you're running a business, but is that the right way to run a football club in this day and age?

3 - Net spend the past 2 seasons is about £35m profit. The preceding seasons were not huge losses by any stretch.

Where has all the money gone?

Put the above 3 points together and only one conclusion can be drawn: we have a chairman who just doesn't want to invest in the club any more.

The money has been wasted on big money flops and their wages. Players who have, or will leave for a pittance of what they cost, and in some cases for nothing. Running costs are high, the ground itself costs around £5m a year to run, which is why I believe if we go down we are screwed as income won’t cover wages and day to day running

This argument only works if those players stay and leave on a free transfer rather than being sold at or near their origin all transfer value, some even loaned out. It also neglects to consider profits on the likes of Traore, Christie, Ramirez, Gibson Etc

people say things like we took a massive loss on Braithwaite all the time, yet we had him scoring goals for us for a few seasons and loaned him out twice, got most of what we paid back for him plus a sell on fee; as an amortised asset over several years I’d say that’s a profit. Same with Britt, people see asking him for day £8m a loss, yet he’s scored 15 a season for us historically and his contracts running

That’s not to say we haven’t bought poorly., as we consistently have, and players that are good elsewhere become shockers here - but saying we spent money on players is a bit of a red herring because we tend to recoup it upon sale.
