We face QPR at home in a 3rd round repley after forcing a 1-1 drawat Loftus Roads artificial pitch, the 1st away team to play on QPR's surface, with Bobby Thomson becoming the the 1st goalscorer on the controversial pitch, QPR hit back late to force a replay & back to Ayresome Park it was

It was our 1st home game of the year, with January weather really bad this replay was postponed 4 times up to this point eventually taking place on a Monday evening
Boro fans were a bit frustrated with our last home win being the 26th September, we were desperate for a cup run to lift a lot of the gloom around Ayresome Park

Boro were forced into one change with Garry Macdonald, for his 2nd start of the season, replacing the injured Dave Shearer, missing his 3rd game of the season

Boro started the game well with Bobby Thomson having a ‘goal’ ruled out for offside, then QPR's CB Ernie Howe kickeing a goalbound strike from Davey Hodgson effort off the line & then Terry Fenwick forced a great save from his own keeper when he miscued a back pass, it certainly looked as though Bobby Murdoch had said a few choice words in the dressing room prior to kick off, then Boro hit the self destruct button & all their good work up in smoke when the visitors went ahead after 21 minutes. Mick Flanagan’s free kick was headed across the goal by Fenwick & Simon Stainrod headed home. The goal changed the game with Rangers looking the far more dangerous side. Just before HT it went from bad to worse when with six minutes remaining before the break Mick Baxter failed to stop Flanagan & he sped away crossing for Stainrod to turn the ball in from close range to leave us trailing back 2 goals to nil

After the break, Boro took the game to Rangers. On 53 minutes Garry Macdonald’s shot was only parried by Ranger’s keeper Peter Hucker & Heine Otto was on the spot to fired in the loose ball in to the net, bringing us right back in the game, Boro's tails were now up & within 2 minutes were level when Davey Hodgson went down in the box under a challenge from Roeder & the ref gave a penalty with the Rangers players surrounded the ref in protesting. Bobby Thomson stepped up & struck the ball home, 2-2, nop, the ref ordered the penalty to be re-taken as there had been encroachment. Bobby Thomson stepped up again & again the right result as he sent Hucker the wrong way with the retake to level the tie at 2-2 & this is how it stayed until extra time was played, deep in to extra time & a 2nd replay looked to be on the cards Ian Gillard swung a cross into the Boro penalty area & Rangers substitute Warren Neill arrived late into the box to meet the cross and fire past Jim Platt & we were out of the FAC at the 1st hurdle

QPR FAC 3rd round replay 05-01-1982.jpg

Bobby Thompson, Garry Mcdonald, Billy Woof,Colin Ross and Joe Bolton would all be contenders for my worst ever Boro 11 yet here they are in the same team,no wonder the ensuing few years were so utterly diabolical.

Not the best of times following the mighty Boro but you need to go through & look at seasons like that to appreciate all the good days
Yes an interesting period, that helps.undestand what was happening in the years leading up to the 1986 nightmare
So interesting I had to post it twice 😮

And to rub salt into the wounds we missed out on a Jolly Boys to Blackpool for the next round.

Yes remember being gutted, me and my brother had persuaded our dad to drive us to Blackpool for the next round
