Hi, I know there are quite a few board members who play golf and I'm looking for some advice about buying some clubs for my son, he is 21 and a beginner. Where would you recommend I go in the Teesside/North Yorkshire area to get some golf clubs with some honest sales advice as I have completely no idea what to look for.. Thanks in advance.

get lessons, then get fitted for clubs that suit his swing. In the mean time there are plenty of second hand clubs for sale online and in a fair few golf shops.

I've just been fitted for irons and Cobras came out best for me and they were also one of the cheapest sets.

Look for forgiving irons if you go off the shelf. Cavity

Look at fogiving clubs if u go off the shelf. Cavity back is generally the key. Wilson d7 ive seen online around 400.

I bought my Cleveland CG16 irons from American golf. Tried them out in shop, £199 for a full set. I'm on my second set in about 10 years. Great clubs, incredible value for the quality

American golf not stocked with wilson d7 online anyway. Ill ring both tomorrow. Barwick n muni. Cheers. Sorry to hijack the origional post but clevelands get good reviews but more expensive d7 wilsons for high handicap players get v good ones too

Definitely have a few lessons first, and then as mentioned above have a look at golfbidder. Swing, stance etc is all likely to change, so spending a decent amount on some fitted clubs when he’s only just started has a good chance of being a waste

I've tried Wilson D7's at Amercian golf and they were very good. American Golf do a good job of fitting. Talk through with their guy what the situation and budget is and they'll sort you out. I've got Taylor Made M4's and i'm very happy with them. Highly recommend lessons to get him off on the right foot.

Which American golf was that?

The best advice on here, listen to this and you won't waste money.
Thirded.

The cheaper alternative to individual lessons for beginners is to see whether you can join a beginners course of group lessons. You save a bit of money. Plus you have the fun of being in a group. So you can see everyone improve. When you are first starting it is easy for the pro to teach 8 people at the same time.

I had a set of 8 group lessons, once a week, at a local driving range. They taught you all the basics. With time for you to practice by yourself between lessons.

Club fitting has been the mantra for years now. It helps for sure, but it brings marginal improvements only. It will not turn bad golfers into good ones. Good golfers don't become bad ones if they play with someone else's clubs.

It's possible to spend a huge amount on fitted clubs quite easily. As others have said - don't think about club fitting until you can consistently hit the ball, in the air, straight (ie no bend) and in approximately the right direction. Unless you are less than 5'6" or taller than 6'4" then start with a second hand set of game improvement clubs with regular flex shafts and standard loft and lie. Club pros will be able to sell you a set or advise whether a set is suitable.

Don't get too wrapped up in distance comparisons between clubs either. Taylormade irons reputedly go further than other makes, but a TM 6 iron is about the same loft as most other makers' 5 irons.

It's a game...

get a 2nd hair pair. Let him play for a year get some lessons then get fitted for some

mid he gets fitted now so much will change with his swing that the clubs won’t be doing their job
