Tomahawk - to avoid after lockdown

Its not like they have no money coming in, A very busy takeaway/delivery service.
I was going to order for my birthday this month, but will go over the road to Lebaneat instead!
The takeaway businesses probably only cover those businesses. They expanded aggressively and took over the French place in Boro, they’re ar newcastle quayside, Acklam hall, london, seem to be popping up all over, they will have huge rents to be paying and finance costs on all of that. Lot of it is new business so probably not eligible for support depending how structured. Restaurants are also often hotels so they’ve got double whammy.

not justifying it btw, just doubt the takeaways are paying the bills!

Well I won't ever be going there again. Plenty of decent gaffs elsewhere. Overrated anyway although their accomodation gaff is decent

five houses farm shop sells a 1kg tomahawk for £25. Take out of fridge and hour before, Season with salt and pepper, put it in the oven until Internal temp is 50c then sear it in a frying pan (I use a Cast iron one) with oil. Add butter, rosemary and garlic, baste it as its searing - one minute each side in a very hot pan - then flip it to the fat side to render the fat then leave it to rest for 10 minutes. Alice off the bone and cut it into slices.

Looks a bit burnt that mate.

Absolute disgrace and I’m not even sure it is legal. Unless they have been topping up the furlough from 80% to 100%.

The furlough cash is specifically for wages so can’t see this standing up against scrutiny

as for the way they have approached it with staff they want to be ashamed of themselves. I went frequently as a family as a couple and took clients to the Yarm one... sure won’t be doing that anymore

What people need to remember is the Furlough scheme is not as generous as it was. It still covers 80% of gross pay, but it does not cover employers NIC nor employers pension contributions. The company are 'asking' for employees to loan them some money to help meet these mandatory additional costs. I don't like how they did it, but they may have no alternative if they have already used up all the other finance options. Who is going to lend to anyone in the hospitality sector unless they already have a stake in a business, or it is underwritten by the government?

Why don't the franchise owners go out with begging bowls on to the streets?

I'd accept asking, but not demanding, borrowing with a return on the loan and the loan guaranteed. Anything else is plain wrong.

I agree. As I said, I can understand perhaps why they might need to do this and they are at least asking for a loan rather than a pay cut, but the way it comes across is not a request with an explanation, but with a gun to the head, which is all wrong.

Why don't they just declare their staff to be self employed contractors then they don't need to worry about employers NI, pensions, holiday pay, sick pay, minimum wage ......... in fact employment rights in general. Perhaps it's only Amazon, Hermes, DPD, Uber, etc., ...................... that can get away with that sort of caper.

Uber been ruled their staff are employees. Likely continue for other companies

Still no excuse.

My bosses haven't asked me to 'loan' them money and we are much much smaller than Tomahawk.

The aggressive growth they went for has unfortunately come back and bit them a bit. Hopefully the budget in Wednesday will help them out

Maybe if the government didn't scapegoat dining out places people wouldn't be taking such desperate measures.

When things reopened last year I felt completely safe in the places I went to - all of their protocols etc were absolutely spot on. Not once did I feel unsafe or uncomfortably close to a stranger.

Exactly. Just greed. They’ve been expanding throughout lockdown when everyone else has been tightening their belts and weathering the storm. Now it’s bitten them on the backside.

Assuming they survive till May they’ll be absolutely fine given the prices they charge.

Something not right about those places. Why are they opening restaurants and taking on significant liabilities during a pandemic? The hospitality industry is on its knees and these chumps are opening up all over the place, in prime real estate I say.

Also, not sure what prices they charge, but with regards to getting one of their steaks and cooking it yourself at home, etc - why would someone pay £25 for a piece of steak? You could feed ten people for that 💪😎

Who the f**k is Alice?

I like Five Houses, but its very overpriced, especially when you can go to Kitson's in Northallerton or Stockton and get mostly the same stuff for cheaper.
