Tomahawk - to avoid after lockdown

This sounds bad, but if it's their only option and guarantees the staff future employment, then is it really that bad?

What if they can't get finance elsewhere, I know tons of companies that can't get anything as they don't meet the criteria? The tow companies have only been going three years, their chance of getting finance is in between 0 and nil.

The alternative might be them going bust, or just laying off all the staff so they get zero furlough.

I think they might end up in court here, how can somebodies suitability for the role be down to whether the staff loan the money or not, shot themselves in the foot with this one.

I’d imagine most staff have been there less than 2 years so it won’t go to court for them. It’s a common misconception that we have loads of protections here, but you only get that after 24 months of continuous employment even if your probationary period was 6 months or whatever. I imagine they will review those and find those inside that period to be unsuitable

If they can’t get finance elsewhere then they clearly have a sh*t business model so why lend them your wages that you very unlikely to get back!

I can’t imagine the government would be happy with their stance, paying furlough payments to keep their business alive, for them to pull a stunt like this.

The idea is decent enough ie without us taking some measures, the business will go under and you'll all be out of a job. Rather than be forced to take a pay cut, if you do it as a loan to us you will at least get it back.

Also, those who volunteer to do this probably should be given some extra credit from the company than those who could, but don't.

However the way they are implementing it sounds like a gun to the head and effectively no choice at all, which is out of order.

I assume they have already taken full advantage of the Bounce back loans and Business Interruption Loan schemes.

I think the issue for Tomahawk is that they are a hospitality business, the worst hit sector, plus they were a business that had been expanding rapidly just before covid hit, so probably were already mortgaged close to the max. They may have nowhere else to go for loans now, until their sector reopens normally.

Yes it is. They are effectively blackmailing their own staff. The 'loans' are interest free aswell? So tomahawk staff are been forced to take a 30% paycut instead of 20%.

Absolutely scandalous and if it comes to pass that it's ok to do what stops every other firm using the job retention scheme doing the exact same thing?

Disgusting, some great people work for tomahawk, they'd be an asset at other establishments.

anyone who thinks this is morally acceptable is beyond the pale...

how can anyone but a die hard supporter of the nasty party think this is reasonable...

They can ask for investment which is essentially what they are doing but they have to give an incentive to do so, not a veiled threat of losing their jobs...

I dont think i could even contemplate using this buisness while they have this policy...

Bad move.
This is the kind of error of judgement that can kill a business.
Shame, I liked their stakes.

Just make your own

five houses farm shop sells a 1kg tomahawk for £25. Take out of fridge and hour before, Season with salt and pepper, put it in the oven until Internal temp is 50c then sear it in a frying pan (I use a Cast iron one) with oil. Add butter, rosemary and garlic, baste it as its searing - one minute each side in a very hot pan - then flip it to the fat side to render the fat then leave it to rest for 10 minutes. Alice off the bone and cut it into slices.
