Unable to finish.....

Can you actually train someone to score a goal ...or to finish....or do you just have that knack.
I used to play up front a bit and it was just natural mainly to score...
Obviously I only played local leagues...so no pressure of a crowd...and it wasn't my job
We are serially unable to put the ball in the F@@@@@@@ net....
I just don't get it....its been like this for a couple of years mainly
We play fantastic approach football and look great...but in the box we just lack a slaven....
Also set pieces....we just don't look creative enough feom set pieces to get anything from them
Feeling annoyed after last night....sick of saying we should have won...but we didn't.. football Is about goals end of...

Yes finishing is the number 1 issue. Last two games we have had far more chances than tghe opposition but not converted them. We do really well until the final ball. We pass at pace, get into good positions and then get to the penalty box and seem to run out of ideas and go back and forth a few times until losing it. Not sure if it is lack of confidence or what

We've lacked a proper poacher for years now. Closest we've come to having that type of striker was Britt, which says it all.

Against Millwall, Watmore fizzed a ball across the face of the goal and there was nobody even close to getting on the end of it. Somebody should have been gambling, particularly Sporar (although I don't think he's fit to be fair).

I got the impression that the players thought 'he won't get that so I cannot be assed to get in the box'
Watmore will go for anything that looks like it's going out and other players should have the same attitude.

We need to pick Sporar out better, and to be fair he needs to finish better.

We have spunked getting on for £50 million on strikers and still barely score.

The supply (currently from Tav/Hernandez/Crooks) needs to be massively improved upon. We constantly want about four or five goes at getting a ball in. We also rarely try a killer ball to get a willing runner on to either. I think a fit and firing Payero would improve us, McGoldrick probably would too.

Our decision making always seems to be the wrong one, when to cross, when to dribble, when to shoot, when to retain possession etc.

Hopefully it can be coached into them.

I say to my lad almost every game 'Watmore must be an absolute nightmare to play against'.

i dont think you can just be a poacher these days you have to have more to your game. You seen with brit, his all round game was lacking. Do we create that many good chances?

Coburn is most likely to score a poachers goal by the looks of his play but again is he good enough in his all round game.

Like last night, he was the one who gambled on the cross by Tav, and very nearly scored.

Defenders must love playing against our forward players at times. They're hardly kept on their toes.

Surprisingly, our xG is actually 4th best in the league overall (7th at home, 3rd away) which suggests we are creating chances and players are getting into goal scoring positions.

I think one positive change with Wilder is that his style of build up play will arguably lead to "easier" chances for the forwards. We saw on Saturday that there will be plenty of one on one chances and I think over time he'll rely on cut backs into feet (Sheff U did this a lot when he was there).

I was a good goalscorer during my teens (when I had my Boro trial) - I was too weak and short at the time... but I knew where the goal was

I'm now over 6 ft and pretty strong... oh well MFC's loss :ROFLMAO:

Exactly why English football has been behind for so long, just because your not a monster at 12, doesn't mean it won't happen

How many points have Boro lost from a winning position this campaign?

MIDDLESBROUGH’S season is beginning to get away from them at a rate of knots having thrown away what looked like a certain victory on the cards last night.

They conceded two goals in four minutes at the Riverside against Preston North End losing 2-1 in Chris Wilder’s second game in charge. It’s one point out of six for the new manager.

At the moment, Boro keep dropping valuable points in needless ways. It’s either a case of not being able to kill teams off or not being able to hold onto a valuable lead.

From winning positions this season, Boro have gone on to drop 16 points in the Championship. That is the difference between promotion and relegation for some team. Also, that is only by the end of November.

They lead 1-0 against Queens Park Rangers before going on to lose the game 3-2 at the Riverside Stadium. It’s been happy hunting ground for teams who fall behind in the game as Blackpool and Preston inflicted a similar result.

Also, Luton Town came from behind to beat Boro scoring three goals in five second half minutes to kill the game off.

The extra 16 points would have put them level on 40 points with second placed Bournemouth.

Of course there will be games where the lead will get away from them but if you can’t manage to win the game, then don’t lose it. That’s something Boro have struggled to do.

After last night’s defeat to Preston North End, Wilder called into question the attitude of some of his players who didn’t put the game to bed.

He said: “Whether they got carried away with it because of the way they played for 20 minutes.

I want them to play with a certain amount of arrogance and confidence but there has to be something at the end of it.
“Momentum is key which we had first half. We didn't have as much in the second so even if we'd have won it's something I'd have touched upon.

“We went individual. They scored from the set-piece, we have a fabulous opportunity to go back into the lead and from that blocked shot from Tav they yet again counter on us. I can accept the individual mistake, it will happen for us and everybody. But the attitude for that period is something that is not acceptable for me.

“I'm a team man, I'm a team player. I understand players in certain positions have to take risks, I get that, but we had them exactly where we wanted them and all we had to do was keep doing the right things, the things that had got us on top.

“We didn't, you take your foot off the gas, go off plan and a set-piece can hurt you, an individual mistake, and they walk away winning the game.

“I know the coaching staff at Preston and have a lot of respect for them but I'll say it how it is, I think it's a game that we chucked.”

That they did. Results tonight may well extend their six point gap to the play-offs and they travel to promotion chasing Huddersfield Town at the weekend.

We literally scored from a set piece last night.

24th of November, does this count @Nobby_Barnes ?

I think too many over think it, Shearer said on one of the Top 10 Podcasts.... he used to just smash it - as his theory was, he hits it on target & hard enough, no keeper is getting to it - he said he never considered the keepers position.. I really like that mindset..

Shearer also said that balance was very important and I think all the top strikers show great balance.

The late great Brian Clough also said balance was important along with keeping your head still and hitting the target.
