Union Flag

120k needless deaths, millions struggling to get by, but this should get the 52% back on side at least....
Why do you have a problem with the flag of our country been flown on government buildings?

Should have happened years ago regardless of whatever political party happens to be in charge.

Cheap distraction technique from the Tories as usual though.

It's about stirring patriotism to secure popularity, rather than gaining popularity through policies that benefit the country, see also ministers with flags in living rooms, pitcures of the queen etc etc
Saying that people have a problem with the flag, or hate Britain or whatever is exactly the narrative they'll use to silence any critics.

I couldnt really care less to be honest, the flag means nothing to me. Just dont understand why so many lap this sort of thing up and seemingly forget about everything else.

Lets whip up a bit of patriotism to get them back on side before millions become unemployed

That's fine.

It also means a lot to others too.

Nothing wrong with loving your country, no politics can hijack that.

Its used as a political tool though which is wrong. Not that I have ever understood why anyone gets so excited by a bit of flag waving, but unfortunately they clearly do.

I hope you know that not everybody who has a belief in the flag for whatever reason uses it as political tool.

Unfortunately the Union flag has been highjacked by the far right and whether you like it or not there are negative connotations to it now.

I've no problem with people trying to reclaim it from the far right, I'm just not sure the most right wing government we've had in generations are the people best placed to do that. For many this will just reinforce the association it has with right.

In principle no problem with the policy. But as has been said by others it's a distraction.

It's also getting pretty tedious the government messing about with this sort of thing (and nonsense like complaining the BBC annual report doesn't have any union flags in it) when there are far more important issues the they should be focussing on. This is the sort of thing you might look at when everything is ticking along nicely. It's not what you should doing in the midst of a pandemic and while trying to sort the brexit nightmare.

"...following new guidance from ministers." What does that even mean? That some serious work on how best to unite the nation was carried out prior to the decision, or that somebody just thought it a good idea to stir up patriotism?
One thing is for certain though; if they think that this will indeed "unite the nation" they are way wide of the mark. How do I know this? A quick read of this thread is the answer.

I don't see anything wrong with being proud of your national flag . Most other countries are.

There's seems to be this misconception that other countries don't do flags or that the UK is an outlier.

Here's everyone's favourite Prime Minister and leader of one of the countries that has best coped with this pandemic.

Yet there was widespread mockery and derision for a very similar layout being created over here for press conferences, as if it was a weird Tory fetish.

Sadly there are a couple of posters on here who thrive on saying people are anti-British and hate our own country. It really stifles any sort of sensible conversation, especially when you can be patriotic AND still be critical of the political landscape in our country.

The Union Jack/Flag is one of the older, more recognisable flags in the world, which means it carries a lot more history than say New Zealand's etc and its not all good. Only younger than Denmark and Netherlands, neither of which have been seen as 'great powers' in recent memory.

Its difficult to see it without also seeing the remnants of Empire (the UK isn't really a country in the common sense but a union of countries), the monarchy and some of Britain's past endeavours. I mean that's if you identify with it at all. I see myself as English more than I do British. That's nothing against the Celtic nations but I do see them, by and large, as separate countries. Most other former great powers (and their flags) have been through a refresh in the last 100 years or so.

I don't really care where its flown but I don't really see how it will unite the nation. To me, all it really represents is an island that is quite stuck in its ways and won't let go of its past and former Empire. Not all flags of all nations carry that same story. But it certainly doesn't bother me if its flown.

If people want to get all teary eyed and start tugging their forelock whilst looking at the union flag then all power to them.

My issue is that the current government are cynically using the flag as a distraction whilst they take away our rights and freedoms; such as we are not allowed to peacefully protest if it causes any 'annoyance' to Priti Patel.
