Union Flag

Sadly there are a couple of posters on here who thrive on saying people are anti-British and hate our own country. It really stifles any sort of sensible conversation, especially when you can be patriotic AND still be critical of the political landscape in our country.
I'd say that any right minded patriotic person should be very critical of the current shambolic state of our politics.

Well we had better get used to it because there’s gonna be plenty of flag waving this side of the next election. It’s no coincidence that this is hot on the heels of Patel introducing tougher laws on asylum seekers. They want to keep the working class brexit vote in the north and the midlands without which Labour can’t win
Power. Starmer has suddenly found the very same flag quite appealing and it isn’t to butter up voters in London . If everyone wasn’t so offended by the sight of the thing it couldn’t be used as a tool by these fckwits.

They didn't hijack that flag.

They outright changed the flag of Germany to it when they took power, and that flag was dropped the second when they were ousted.

I'm sure that millions of Germans still loved Germany even after the Second World War.

But it took less than 2 pages for someone to equate liking a flag with the Nazis, so that's fun.

I was directly answering the statement that no politics can hijack a love of one's country. That flag and lots of others proves that it's actually quite a simple task.

But it took 2 answers for someone to not read the exchange properly, so that's fun.

I hung a Union and a Boro flag in my University bedroom 20 odd years ago. In the same corridor other students from other countries hung their respective flags. I was accused of being right wing, member of BNP etc by a number of other British students. When I mentioned about the other students with their flags, this was deemed acceptable in their eyes.
My response was I was proud to be from the Boro and proud to be British (Still am).

The implication in your post was clear.

The rise of Nazi Germany and other disgusting regimes was far from a simple task either.

Was that ever recognised as the flag of a country or a regime?

That's not me been funny, genuinely don't know.

The Nazis took over in 1933, they made it the joint flag then, and then the sole flag in 1935, it was banned in 1945, understandably neither Germany used it after the partition and it's still illegal in Germany till this day

"In a statement, culture secretary Oliver Dowden said the new guidance will create "a proud reminder of our history and the ties that bind us.”
Will that be all of our history or just some of it?

Thanks.
Wasn't that an extraordinary period though? The country of Germany had effectively been taken over by a group that not every German citizen supported?

Wait, that sounds awfully familiar to what's happening in this country right now. 😟

I work for the Government but am fortunate to be able to WFH during the pandemic. Does this mean I need to get one for the house now?

Wonder if I can claim for a flag pole on expenses 🤔🇬🇧

I’m old enough to remember Cool Britannia. The first thing Blair did when he got the gig as Labour leader was make a speech with that flag behind him. Have a look at pictures from the day he won power he’s surrounded by people waving that flag. Mandleson even used a British bulldog as a prop and said without any shame whatsoever that it’s symbolised new Labour as a one nation patriotic party. Politicians use it every time they want to tug the voters in and this is no different. If people were honest it’s not the flag being waved that bothers them it’s the people that wave it.

How did I know the usual suspects would be on to defend the flag?

They MUST know it's being used as a political tool. They MUST know it's current excessive use has never been seen in peacetime. They simply HAVE to understand this is a cheap ploy to hide all the bad stuff thats happening in the country. Yet still they defend it. These entrenched views are so depressing
