Union Flag

I’m old enough to remember Cool Britannia. The first thing Blair did when he got the gig as Labour leader was make a speech with that flag behind him. Have a look at pictures from the day he won power he’s surrounded by people waving that flag. Mandleson even used a British bulldog as a prop and said without any shame whatsoever that it’s symbolised new Labour as a one nation patriotic party. Politicians use it every time they want to tug the voters in and this is no different. If people were honest it’s not the flag being waved that bothers them it’s the people that wave it.
Exactly right, it's the people waving it and why they're doing it. When it's a bunch of ****s trying to take advantage of peoples love of their country I don't like it.

How did I know the usual suspects would be on to defend the flag?

They MUST know it's being used as a political tool. They MUST know it's current excessive use has never been seen in peacetime. They simply HAVE to understand this is a cheap ploy to hide all the bad stuff thats happening in the country. Yet still they defend it. These entrenched views are so depressing
Not such a surprise. I would say most but not all are those who wanted us to leave the EU, don't want any immigrants or asylum seekers or understand or support BLM. A bit of a theme perhaps.

Remember the game 'capture the flag'? This is what this is. What you want the Union Jack to represent is formed by those who are waving it. Unfortunately, those who are waving it at the moment are doing it for snide, cynical reasons and to shut down questions and scrutiny. They represent a dreamland where other nations take our bunch of bad sofa salesman seriously, and 'being British' means doing what you want because we speak the Queen's.

It won't last forever, within a generation it will be back in the hands of people who would rather look forward than backwards.

Well Jim, this is certainly a very uncool Britannia.

This is your fat, racist, misogynist, leachorous Uncle drunkenly dancing at a wake after he's robbed the collection tins at the local hospital and put the ill gotten gains behind the bar to pay for drinks for his best mates.

But he's waving a union flag so all is forgiven.

I expect this is a policy primarily aimed at Wales and Scotland, given the last year has seen all 4 nations acting almost autonomously from one another on the biggest crisis in decades and the obvious issues surrounding support for independence.
There's bound to be disassociation from the British state when everything major is coming from Holyrood and the Senedd, and I presume their press conferences have been in front of the saltire and the red dragon.
It will be part of a campaign to try a rebuild support for a British identity and the United Kingdom

Obviously Northern Ireland has been excluded because of the history and issues there, and the worry of inflaming violent tensions.

I may be giving people too much credit, but I really don't think it's just to try and distract voters in Norwich from the failings of government by waving a flag from a building.

I did say it was the person waving it and not the flag that was the issue.

And what will that British identity have to be?

Proud of winning a war over 80 years ago but blinkered to the problems facing the country now?
Constantly banging on about freedom, but quite willing to cheer on the sinking of asylum seekers in the channel?
Chest beating about our influence on the global stage, but turning a blind eye to the city of London laundromat or selling the Saudi's missiles to hammer Yemen?
Cheering sporting success of people like Mo Farah, Lewis Hamilton and Marcus Rashford, but the knives are out whenever they say something about the direction of the country?

I think it’s aimed at the red wall. If they can hang on to a good bit of it Labour are screwed.

Yep, it's clearly all that.
That's exactly the plan I imagine they'll use.

I think I'm going to have to take a break from this board soon, because it is just full of constantly miserable, bitter and cynical people.

I've got to shoulder some of the blame for constantly getting drawn in to threads when I should know better, but it's not easy to avoid them when they're all lumped together on one page and you've got to sift through them to find the occasional football thread.
Even that's usually people saying that they don't enjoy football anymore or that they hate the Premier League, or how much better things were in the past, or how much they hate Assombalonga.

It's just depressing coming on here lately.

Sorry @TeaCider I wasn't having a dig at you personally or your posts, just the overall situation we find ourselves in.

And what do you mean 'lately' ;)

British people "proud" to display their patriotism and adherence to the flag:

Moseley always cited his love of the Natives of the British Isles - despised Jews, non-aryans, Trades Unionists, dissenters.....believed in Hitler, a centralised authoritarian state and militarism.

There are huge contradictions for the flag-waivers:

Commonwealth Soldiers fighting fascism in World War Two.

The "windrush" generation which helped build the new National Health Service - later to staff it and care for the population.

Racist policies making people of colour second class citizens.

"British Values" 🇬🇧 ?! : the real narrative is obscured from public view, by a media complicit in deception:
Thatcher Bliar Ira lies.jpg
Politicians use the flag to cover up real poverty and inequality to justify privilege for the few.

I hung a Union and a Boro flag in my University bedroom 20 odd years ago. In the same corridor other students from other countries hung their respective flags. I was accused of being right wing, member of BNP etc by a number of other British students. When I mentioned about the other students with their flags, this was deemed acceptable in their eyes.
My response was I was proud to be from the Boro and proud to be British (Still am).
Britain’s not really a country is it - it’s more of a Union of countries formed on the basis of finance

You are full of it
I'm proud of my British identity and the loving upbringing I had in a free country. I will never identify with the racists in this country that you seem to think people are if they can be proud of being British.
Some people( like me) on here are old enough that their parents and family were involved in the 2nd world war and I am proud that they stood against the Nazis and the fascists and won . I used to love listening to what it was like during that time , I'm far from being blinkered about our current situation. I've had a 30 yr career in the NHS how could I be.
Love Hamilton and Farrah and think what Rashford is doing is superb.
Oh and please send us a link to all these people cheering the sinking of asylum seekers.
Yes some things are wrong but don't try and lump us all in the same demographic just to suit your bitter and twisted view of people and the country you seem to hate..

I get a lot of that. It makes sense. In the current state of the country I can't agree but you have good points. The fact you are proud we fought against the fascists should give you pause at the moment. This very thread is reflecting something that is happening in this country that happened in Germany in the 30s.
