Variant of concern in South Africa

Lets hope that is the case and the mutations don't affect vaccines. 30 mutations is a lot, I would have thought though. Whilst the mutations may not have had the vaccine petri dish to mutate in, it is, as you say, early days.

Heres hoping.

Watching the WHO news conference, the guy presenting it, and his accent was strong, so it was a struggle, suggested that they were deciding whether it was a variant of concerrn. Listening to otherr news channels, they seem to be doom and gloom about this, sensationalising the ass out of it. They ma, of course, turn out to be right, but the WHO seem to be advocating a watching and monitoring brief at the moment.
Yeah, obviously take what I wrote with a pinch of salt mind, as I'm clearly not a geneticist  I get numbers and graphs though

Have been following a few geneticists for a long while now mind, and they all seem respected by others, even when opinions differ on measures to be taken. Balloux has some views on things which I don't align with, and some of his previous views were a bit selfish, but he's admitted that, he's quite centrist like me.

Some think lots of mutations could mean for some vaccine evasion, but I think what they're getting at, is by doing this, they may become weaker. I don't think many of the those picked up with Omicron have been symptomatic, and not sure if any had died, but did read about one 32 year old who had a booster a month ago, and she still got it (asymptomatic).

News will scaremonger at the wrong time, and play things down at the wrong time too, a lot of the time they're trying to appeal to a set audience. Those who I follow who have been sensible and rational, and even the way over cautious aren't making as much of deal out of this as those who've been denying it the entire time, but I don't follow any of the latter, just see their quoted tweets by others.

Most are concerned, and agree that we should put control measures in place whilst we find out more, which should only take a week or two. Moderna and Pfizer already have already created variant specific vaccines, including Omicron. They did all the testing with Delta and Alpha, but didn't need to role them out as the vaccines were still excellent. They may chose to roll out one for this, and Moderna think they could have it on the shelves in 3 months.

It could have originated anywhere, the other closest branch on the sequence tracing, is largely in England , but this wasn't the mutated one, that looks like SA, but may not be the first case, could be somewhere else along the way. Quite a lot of mixing between SA and England, and SA played at Twickenham a few weeks ago, but this seems to have originated long before that.

It's seemingly been harvested for some time, contained in a very small area where it's just mutated and mutated.

Ah long Covid, very popular amongst public sector workers and WFH types, I’ve yet to meet a self employed brickie or plumber with it
Errr ! i suffer from long covid , have done since December , extreme fatigue, insomnia, extreme pain in my joints, making it difficult to walk without waddling . As a result of the above ive muscle loss and lack of energy. Having previously been very fit and active, So it certainly does exist
im a self employed , builder . I go out to work everyday, physically working sometimes after 2 to 3 hours sleep. the most i get is 5 hrs, usually wake up from the pain in my joints , this has been going on since getting over covid in November.
Although i get your point about public service workers or indeed anyone who can get paid sick , it is a great vehicle for free loaders .

Admit it you’re praying for another lockdown aren’t you?? If you came out from behind your settee and joined the real world you’d realise most of us have moved on and decided we can put up with a virus with a 99.8% survival rate
Why does anyone voicing concerns deserve a response like that?

What the unvaccinated don't seem to realise that if there is another lockdown it's on them.

If everyone did what they were supposed to: take the vaccine, social distance, wear a mask we would have had this beat by now.

Responses like this subconsciously reflect the growing insularity of the population in my opinion.
It's easy to call it the "I'm alright Jack" syndrome, but I honestly think that it can be a little scary to consider the world outside your own as it can demonstrate just how little control we have over our lives in reality.
Like the poster above, I've worked throughout the pandemic and been lucky to avoid catching Covid which is a blessing as I care for 2 people that are particularly at risk as well as being in the potentially vulnerable over 50s group myself.
In the past I've been accused on here of being a doom monger, but it's mainly due to me being willing to think of the wider and longer term aspects of the pandemic.
I don't think these accusations of "lockdown loving" are necessarily malicious, but I'd hope that response like mine and the lad above who's wife works in healthcare and has probably suffered far, far more than most in the last 2 years make people think a little outside their own concerns.

Planes were coming in from SA yesterday before the ban kicked in so no surprise we have found it in the community already. Looks like they are taking quick action. Face coverings should have been more than advisory in shops and closed indoor spaces.

We really should have done track and trace for anyone who came from africa in the last 10 days or so, then T&T on their contacts. I assume 37 billion doesn't buy that kind of agility or capacity.

Yes I'm quite surprised at the UK's response. Thought we would have stuck with our tried and trusted 'wait a fortnight until we see out it pans out' technique that we've deployed with such success in the past. Presumably we're not negotiating any trade deals in southern Africa at the mo.

It bloody well should but most shops, public places dont have the qr codes displayed at the entrances anymore.

Wonder if we can do the sensible thing and return to masks indoors, work from home, increased testing etc or the usual waiting until it’s too late then full scale lockdown. Let’s see if he has learned anything from the last two years

These inward travellers should have been going straight home and isolating and not visiting shops of course. Our track and trace is of course completely useless

It’s a pain. Ws going over to Paris for the day on Eurostar next week but will have to self isolate 2 days and pay £60 for a PcR test on return.
