Ward-Prowse

We don’t really have any decent free kick takers do we ? Surely these lads have enough time to practice
Been a long time since we’ve had someone standing over a free kick on the edge of the box and you think “this has a chance of going in”.

McNair can deliver a good ball, but we rarely see someone shooting from a free kick.

You‘d Hope Payero has a good free kick on him but his opportunities have been limited.

Maybe McGree is the man for the job?

he’s a cracking player who should get more England games. His set piece delivery is second to none. He could make a real difference coming off the bench in tight games or where England are struggling with defensive teams. Certainly should be getting in the squad ahead of a 3rd or 4th choice right back.

100% agree.

He’s the one player I thought we should have taken to the euros. I said it before then euros, and was even more convinced afterwards.

Even if he only got brought on with 5 mins to go in extra time (with the view to taking a penalty), and if he pops up with a free kick to prevent it going to pens then even better.

It was practically a certainty that we would got to penalties at some point.

Bringing players (Rashford and Sancho?) on to take a pen with a couple of minutes to go in the final obviously didn’t work. But if you’re bringing on a specialist penalty taker, someone who’s best assett is how he strikes the ball, then I think he would likely have scored. And one penalty in that final could have changed the outcome.

It's an interesting point you make, until you look at their respective penalty records - JWP has scored 13 missed 4, Rashford has scored 15 missed 2, Sancho has scored 10 missed 1. Admittedly those stats from transfermarkt include various youth games, especially for Sancho. Nevertheless if you look solely at 1st team club pens up to the point of selecting the England squad for the Euros, Sancho had scored 3 and missed 0 for Dortmund (all in the 2020/21 season), Rashford had scored 9 and missed 2, whilst JWP had scored 7 and missed 3. In fact, in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, JWP missed 3 out of 7 in the Premier League. Those stats do not suggest that JWP is any more reliable from the spot, neither does the fact he took and missed a penalty for England 3 months ago in a situation far less pressured than a major final shootout.

I think every team in the EPL would love a player like him on free kicks, he's the best there is.

Hasn't he scored more goals in the PL from outside the box than anyone else?

Wow, I’m really surprised at that. Thought he stats on pens would be much better than that.

Not even close. He has 36 PL goals including 10 pens, so a maximum of 26 goals from outside the box. According to a 2017 article that I have not fact-checked, Shearer, Beckham, Gerrard, JFH and Lampard were the top 5, all with at least 33 goals outside the box and Lampard on top with 41.

David Beckham scored directly from 18 free kicks in the Premier League, and that's the record.

James Ward-Prowse is currently on 12 and counting, he's only 27, he might well break the record.

He might and good luck to him, but don't overlook the fact that he has already played more PL games than Beckham.

...nor the fact that Beckham played for Ferguson's United and the way in which they managed "referees" to obtain favourable decisions is unequalled before or since.
