Warnock quote from his Notts County days

Anyone remember when Warnock got promoted with Notts County (91?) him coming out with a comment along the lines of “no disrespect to the likes of Oxford, Newcastle and Hull but it’ll be great to be playing the big top flight teams”.

Properly wound up the deluded from up the road, being used as an example of a small club..! I’ve liked Warnock since then.

I seem to recall the FMTTM at the time featuring it.

Ferguson once called them a 'wee club in the north east' too, much to their dismay.

Yea they beat us over two legs in the playoff SF 😔

Warnock ranks us as one of his most difficult opponents in that 2 leg semi final - particularly Stuart Ripley who he says is one of the best individuals he has had to go up against.
I put this to Bernie Slaven recently. He added that Colin Todd issuing his retained list and going public with a list of players he wanted to sign but more importantly releasing destroyed the team morale. All about timing but he really ought to have waited until the games were played before annoucing in the press that it was the end of the line for Bernie Slaven and others. And maybe waited until he had signed the players before announcing their names. As it happens we lost to Notts County. Bernie didn't leave and neither Joe Allan nor others were signed. The prospect of signing Nigel Callaghan from Watford actually speeded Toddy's demise.

We had some good matches against them that season.

1-0 at home was a cracking early season match.
We lost 3-2 a Meadow Lane despite leading twice. Baird missed a horrible penalty late on. One of my favourite away grounds, ML.
I think they were much the better side in the playoffs though.
