In case some pensioners haven't got the message:
Fury as Waspi women denied payouts
Fury as Waspi women denied payouts
We don't normally agree but it does seem like another own goal by the Labour party to me.The same Liz Kendall that previously promised a fair solution for WASPI women?
The same Labour that previously criticised the Tories for not implementing compensation?
Gotcha.
What is the point of an independent ombudsman if the government can just refuse to go along with their findings?
My mind goes back to Rayner in 2019 accusing the Tories and Lib Dems of stealing the money from WASPI women and saying, and I quote, "Labour will right those wrongs" :rolleyes:We don't normally agree but it does seem like another own goal by the Labour party to me.
Huh?WASPE, not WASPI.
They are are complaining about the pension being equalised. It was already inequal, hence the changes, they are against pension equality. They are only against equality for themselves though. They are happy that all men should have retired later and happy that all men and women born from 1960 onwards should retire later but their specific cohort should be allowed to be treated differently.Huh?
Smoke and mirrors. They are are complaining about the pension being equalised. It was already inequal, hence the changes, they are against pension equality. They are only against equality for themselves though. They are happy that all men should have retired later and happy that all men and women born from 1960 onwards should retire later but their specific cohort should be allowed to be treated differently.
That was just a recommendation. The majority of the complaints had been dismissed and the only finding of maladministration was that there hadn't been a letter sent out in 2204 which was subsequently sent in 2006, which was still 10+ years since the changes had been made and still gave time before actual retirement. There is no evidence of financial loss so compensation isn't due, whatever the recommendations from the ombudsman.Smoke and mirrors.
It's irrelevant what viewpoint individuals have on the rights and wrongs of the WASPI argument. The simple fact is that the Ombudsman found maladministration and recommended compensation. That is the only view that should matter and it is disgraceful that the government can just refuse to comply with the findings.
This is Starmer though, who just says whatever he thinks people want to hear at the time that benefits him the most. He lacks the most basic decency and honesty and is an absolute disgrace to the position of Prime Minister.
This Labour government are unfit to govern, every single minister appears completely out of their depth.
Where have you got that 2p in the pound figure from?I have every sympathy for the WASPI women, but I do wonder if every tax payer in the country- including the ones complaining on here, would be prepared to pay 2p in the £ tax increase that would be needed to pay for the £10b compensation?
I find it incredible how easily people are willing to overlook Starmer's and Labour's dishonesty. That was just a recommendation. I'm no fan of Starmer at all but not wasting £10bn giving away money to people whose only claim is ignorance would be very wasteful and I don't think the rest of us taxpayers should be footing that bill.
I agree that politicians shouldn't say one thing when in opposition and do the opposite thing in power. It's one of the things I hate most about politics/politicians. They have also opposed the government on a million other things which they are not changing now that they have power though like below inflation pay rises for the public sector for over a decade, brexit, re-nationalising industries, all of Starmer's leadership pledges etc.I find it incredible how easily people are willing to overlook Starmer's and Labour's dishonesty.
Liz Kendall promised a solution for WASPI women.
Angela Rayner said the government would right the wrong.
Starmer himself said the pension changes were a massive injustice and something needed to be done to rectify it.
Yet suddenly it's fine for them to just say no?

I think both your points are fair. The government have been duplicitous in order to get votes. They will just argue ‘but the black hole etc’ some of the £22Bn is their own doing though. I had high hopes of Labour, but they need to realise they are handing lifelines to the Tories and Reform on a daily basis so farI find it incredible how easily people are willing to overlook Starmer's and Labour's dishonesty.

Each penny in the pound paid in income tax contributes to about £6b.Where have you got that 2p in the pound figure from?
They’ve been an absolute disgrace so far, they seem determined to be a one term government.I think both your points are fair. The government have been duplicitous in order to get votes. So it would be less than 2p in the pound even at the max 10.5 billion. Much less at the lower level estimate of 3.5 billion. Each penny in the pound paid in income tax contributes to about £6b.
At the rate they are currently going generally, along with the state of the country, they wont last a full term. They’ve been an absolute disgrace so far, they seem determined to be a one term government.
