WASPI women can do one.

The same Liz Kendall that previously promised a fair solution for WASPI women?

The same Labour that previously criticised the Tories for not implementing compensation?

Gotcha.

What is the point of an independent ombudsman if the government can just refuse to go along with their findings?

We don't normally agree but it does seem like another own goal by the Labour party to me.

There has been a shed load of publicity about it on the news and in papers at the time of the 1995 Act and the 2007 Act. The vast majority will have known through tv, newspapers, radio and social media.

Was the argument about the acceleration of the process by a couple of years by the Coalition of 2010 and not being notified in the prescribed way? Again I recall loads of publicity and uproar from women's pressure groups at the time as well as discussions across various media. I have some sympathy, but not a lot as state pension is not a right but a benefit (a hole new argument on that can be had mind), changes have been made and publicised previously affecting all pensioners. I as a man, was never notified formerly by government about the rise above 65 but I knew I’d had it put back and would need to plan ahead.

I get the anger as women may not have had years credited with NI for a variety of reasons, which may be unfair i.e homemakers who had Child Benefit paid to husband and various other reasons. I do think they should be able to buy credits for missing years to help their position no matter how far back although many wold struggle to do so. However, it also rather begs the question what is the point of an ombudsman if their findings can be ignored. I get the country is a mess financially thanks to mismanagement under all governments over time, but that will never change moving forward.

The government does seem keen to shoot itself in the foot though but there is no magic money tree and I fear they may cause a recession if not careful. Every working ordinary UK resident will continue to pay more for less as always, no matter who is in charge.

WASPE, not WASPI.

The changes gave them more time to prepare, not less, by delaying their retirement age.

They are are complaining about the pension being equalised. It was already inequal, hence the changes, they are against pension equality. They are only against equality for themselves though. They are happy that all men should have retired later and happy that all men and women born from 1960 onwards should retire later but their specific cohort should be allowed to be treated differently.

Smoke and mirrors.

It's irrelevant what viewpoint individuals have on the rights and wrongs of the WASPI argument. The simple fact is that the Ombudsman found maladministration and recommended compensation. That is the only view that should matter and it is disgraceful that the government can just refuse to comply with the findings.

This is Starmer though, who just says whatever he thinks people want to hear at the time that benefits him the most. He lacks the most basic decency and honesty and is an absolute disgrace to the position of Prime Minister.

This Labour government are unfit to govern, every single minister appears completely out of their depth.

I have every sympathy for the WASPI women, but I do wonder if every tax payer in the country- including the ones complaining on here, would be prepared to pay 2p in the £ tax increase that would be needed to pay for the £10b compensation?

That was just a recommendation. The majority of the complaints had been dismissed and the only finding of maladministration was that there hadn't been a letter sent out in 2204 which was subsequently sent in 2006, which was still 10+ years since the changes had been made and still gave time before actual retirement. There is no evidence of financial loss so compensation isn't due, whatever the recommendations from the ombudsman.

I'm no fan of Starmer at all but not wasting £10bn giving away money to people whose only claim is ignorance would be very wasteful and I don't think the rest of us taxpayers should be footing that bill.

Where have you got that 2p in the pound figure from?

I find it incredible how easily people are willing to overlook Starmer's and Labour's dishonesty.

Liz Kendall promised a solution for WASPI women.

Angela Rayner said the government would right the wrong.

Starmer himself said the pension changes were a massive injustice and something needed to be done to rectify it.

Yet suddenly it's fine for them to just say no?

I agree that politicians shouldn't say one thing when in opposition and do the opposite thing in power. It's one of the things I hate most about politics/politicians. They have also opposed the government on a million other things which they are not changing now that they have power though like below inflation pay rises for the public sector for over a decade, brexit, re-nationalising industries, all of Starmer's leadership pledges etc.

I think we both have a low opinion of Starmer. That doesn't mean that they are wrong to say no on this matter now though.

I think both your points are fair. The government have been duplicitous in order to get votes. They will just argue ‘but the black hole etc’ some of the £22Bn is their own doing though. I had high hopes of Labour, but they need to realise they are handing lifelines to the Tories and Reform on a daily basis so far

They’ve been an absolute disgrace so far, they seem determined to be a one term government.
