Flying scarves from car windows on the way to a match? Early 90's saw us regularly making a 350 mile round trip to home games (away games were easier though!) and one way of passing the time was spotting fellow Boro fans making their way North, scarves flying on the wind - these were pre-DAB and podcast days, of course. Doesn't seem to happen any longer, which I think is a bit of a shame.

I used to see a BMW on a side street i often park on when going to town, displaying a large ugly sticker on its back window, the owner clearly a deluded dirty Leeds supporter. a couple of weeks before Christmas, as I was walking by I saw the vehicle had its rear window smashed right where his large LUFC sticker was. I thought to myself, cars really have gone up in value.

It was an 80s 'satnav'. You used to regularly drive into a city and just follow the first car who had a scarf flying or a football shirt on.

The chances are they were lost or you hoped the Red scarf wasn't someone going to watch UTD or Liverpool 😂
I did this (80's Sat Nav) going to watch us play Charlton when they played at Palace. I saw a bus with Cleveland on it and followed it.

It was Hartlepool RUFC and we ended up totally lost.

Regarding scarves hanging out of windows - We were on our way to Wembley for the FA Cup Final and stopped off at a service station. There was a guy selling scarves and flags and I haggled with him and bought two flags to stick out of the rear windows. Back in the car, everyone was starting to get that cup final excitement about them, we whacked on 'Let's Dance' on full volume, flags out of the window and off we went. As soon as I got up speed on the slip road, the flags went flying back towards the service station and we were left with two bamboo sticks that I had paid a fiver each for.

Haha - I was thinking the same recently. I was driving past Harrogate, on the A1 over Xmas and a car past me with scarves out of the window (Harrogate were playing somewhere) and i thought to myself - "is that still a thing?).

On a purely technical point of view my car now has electric windows and they wont close with anything blocking the mechanism, so can't hold a scarf like my old Hillman Avenger used to!

Good point. We used to tie the scarves around the grab handle over the top of the window (no idea what it's called) and leave the window open a tiny bit. Such dedication in those days.

No, not hard enough.
Yes, covered in players names - Downing, Jones, Hickton, McMordie, O'Rourke etc. Mind you, called them doctor's coats, must have been an aspirational council estate lad!

Also had a Tommy's metal helmet from Army Surplus store, painted red & white. Weighed a ton and only worn once, probably oncetoo many!!

Don’t think it’s the correct terminology, but we always called them the chicken strip
