I lived in Stockton for 25 years. The only Mackem i ever knew of was the one that decorated his windows in Billingham with SAFC memorabilia.

It was a ridiculous comment amade to make our achievements appear more remarkable, when all it did was make a very significant portion of the fan base think Steve Gibson was a bit of a ****.

It was more than that, he wanted Snodgrass, Bojan and Deulofeu all were rated around £10m a piece. He wanted to keep Gaston Ramirez also..
Very specific players
Instead we brought in
Rudy Gestede for £6m - absolutely shocking signing
Adlene Guedioura for £4.5m - utterly baffling
Patrick Bamford for £5.5m - I like the kid.. but he was not what we needed
£16m* on pure tosh these players are nowhere near the types of players that Karanka was looking for. Even preparing for the championship I would say they are poor transfers. We were scraping the wrong barrel which is surprizing seen as we had our own scouting team/network whatever.

*Pulis spent £20m in the championship without blinking an eye £8m on George Saville, £7m on Aden Flint and £5m on Paddy McNair.

It seems very much like something else was needed, and that something else perhaps did not include Aitor Karanka. It would have been interesting to see what Nigel Pearson would have made of the boro at that point in time and who he would have looked to bring in..

I can confirm as absolute fact Snodgrass was a done deal until West Ham blew us out of the water re wages

All of them.

The Tory thing was a sickener, but for me personally the Stockton Mackems comment is the one that still gets to me a bit.

As other people have said, anyone who grew up in Stockton knows that it is absolutely not true. I can't remember even meeting a Sunderland fan in the first 19 years of my life.

Not signing Bojan, Jese and Delofeu must count amongst SGs success though? It's not an argument in favour of signing who we did, but those 3 would have made no difference to our survival, and cost us a lot more.

Would Karanka have definitely used them? Would it perhaps be a case of them playing 1 at a time, and having to switch flanks at half time so they were close enough for him to scream defensive instructions at?

Not sure, but for me they're all high priced turkeys.

Delofeu has games when he looks good but the vanishes for months. The other two I don't rate at all.

Especially Jesse who has been nothing but trouble ever since.

Well the poll has closed and it was really close between the options but I am most surprised that the Woodgate appointment received so few votes, especially as it is the most recent.

The others must have been bad for Woodgate to only come in as 5th poorest decision he has made.
