Who are Boro's Italian team?

Was going to say Parma, we had a similar rise in the 90s, they had some great players back then and the best goalie in the league in Buffon

Fiorentina always seems a popular choice amongst English fans.

I think it's because they play in purple, which is an entirely neutral colour in English football.

I like Florence, but I could never get over Fiorentina's notorious swastika kit back in the 90s

I have a soft spot for Genoa: arguably the only good stadium of Italia 90, and more history than their upstart city rivals. They also had Thomas Skuhravy, who I thought was the business as a kid due to his world cup hat trick. Also founded as a cricket club.

I'm not sure that it was intentional, maybe you can educate me?

The club was founded by a fascist but their supporters from what I can tell and am told, are politically neutral.

Lazio - were a favourite team of the Italian Blackshirts - a lot of their support comes from the affluent suburbs and hinterland of Rome.

Roma tends to be more working class support.

Bologna is famously left wing area of Italy.

We played Inter for a match for Willie Maddren in 1996 and Festa played for Inter - First time I saw Emerson and was impressed, game was 0-0.

I always thought we were a sort of Udinese of England - unfashionable, but tough to beat. An area away from the big cities of Milan, Turin, Rome, Naples, Florence, Genoa. A team in the 1990s willing to invest in players from South America.

I read Juventus were the best supported team in Italy. A lot of people moved to Turin for work in the motor industry from the very poor South of Italy and they adopted Juventus with passion to give them a greater sense of attachment with their new living area.

Yeah they claimed it was unintentional. I can believe it because it took me ages to spot them and I was actively looking for swastikas, so I can see how it could have been an innocent unintended side effect of the design that went unnoticed until release.

But I suppose only the club/designers will know for certain.

That Juventus team of the mid 80's though. They played Rossi, Boniek and Bettega up front and had Platini in the hole! So much for defensive Italians!

Udinese is a good shout as is Parma. Two provincial clubs who tried their damnedest to mix with the big boys! And In Parma's case, eclipse them for a short while.

Inter - the only time in history a player’s Boro career has been almost defined by a performance in a pre-season friendly!

I wouldn't make any definite claims based on the shirt, though some Italian clubs (notably Lazio and Livorno) are associated with particular political stances. When picking a nominal team in a foreign country, it doesn't take too much to influence my opinions.

However, I found it quite hard to believe it was accidental, but maybe that's because once you see it, it's very difficult not to see it (also more conspicuous on the long sleeved version). I'd expect a kit design to be ratified by a large number of people, and for them all not to notice is a bit suspicious.

TBH I think having a purple kit is far worse than having one covered in swastikas. It is the worst colour. What were they thinking? Probably let's play in shirts the colour of a bell end.
