Who has been the best / most influential band of the last 30 years?

Without Nirvana being influential, you wouldn't have ever had the Foo Fighters (any many other bands), and I'm a big fan of both.

Nirvana only really got going into the mainstream when they ditched Sub-Pop, and started working on Nevermind, but that wasn't going well until Grohl got on board and Butch Vig producing etc. Without the latter two they wouldn't have been anywhere near as big and that was 90's onwards. Not saying Bleach wasn't good mind, as it really was, but it was never goign to be mainstream or influential.

I don't know many who list Foo Fighters as their favourite band, especially not after There is Nothing Left to Lose, which was terrible compared to the Colour and the Shape or the self titled first album. The funny thing is Dave did everything on the first album, and I think they got picked up without relying on Grohl's name as he sent the tape out anonymous.

Oasis is a fair shout too, especially for the UK, moreso than Radiohead I think.

I don't think Radiohead really influenced many bands, as nobody could match what they did, but most people into rock appreciated them, and more the UK than anywhere.
Most bands influence other bands, Radiohead influence genres ;)

What genre was Radiohead, where they influenced more than others?

The closest band I can think to them is maybe Sigur Ros, but that's not to say they were influenced by Radiohead and certainly not so much early Radiohead (Pablo Honey, Ok Computer, The Bends etc), as Sigur Ros were going before Kid A, when Radiohead went a bit less mainstream.

Most see as their best, as the first three albums, and most lost interest after that.

I like both Radiohead and Sigur Ros mind, but I just don't see their influences in anything else, not compared to what else was around then.

The Strokes have to be up there, maybe not hugely groundbreaking musically but they pretty much kickstarted the whole 00’s guitar bands thing, which so many bands gained success from such as Arctic Monkeys and lots more. You could reel off a big number of bands that had success in a that period after all the record companies were looking for bands like that after The Strokes appeared.

I'll happily say that I love the 1st couple of Oasis albums and The Masterplan. Mind you I don't know if they influenced anyone, they were very influenced themselves, that's why a lot of people criticise them.
Pretty much everyone was influenced by the bands that influenced Oasis, whether they even like them or not, and they were all influenced by what came before them, and them what came before them etc.

Wonderwall is the song that pretty much every single guitarist since 1995 has learnt to play at some point, and they probably started with it first (it's easy), that's influential. Wonderwall was the stairway to heaven of the 90's and 2000's

Good call, they influenced a load of the NME bands from like 2000 onwards, and were big in USA too of course.

Nirvana killed **** rock and made all the major labels run around trying to sign bands that sound like them.
Daft Punk have been cited recently as being massively influential.
Fact is guitar music is dead today so anyone influential isn't going to be playing guitars.

Jusin Bieber. Pretty sure he's influenced a load of fifteen year olds to make a you tube account.

I guess it all depends on your definition of what's influential. If Radiohead aren't but Daft Punk are, then we're in trouble.

You're right. The real answer to the question in the OP will be a rap or hip hop act 🙉

I don't think I have a favourite band as such, but if I did it'd probably be the Foo Fighters (so maybe I do! 😂🤦‍♂️).

I wouldn't really be able to explain why though. I don't think they're particularly groundbreaking or innovative and if I'm honest a lot of their songs are quite samey. Not sure how influential they are? Not even sure they're cool? Are they cool? Or a bit cheesy? Or maybe a bit of both?

Its maybe because they're just fun to listen to. I like the vast majority of their songs, they're excellent live and they seem like a good bunch of lads to boot.

The real driving force in music has been the rising costs of housing and education meaning kids don't have any money and the internet means it's much easier to make electronic music. Hence no guitar bands and mainly solo artists. There are no garage bands because kids can't afford garages. They can afford garage band.

I think they were my favourite band for a part of the 90's and 00's, but that wore off after there is nothing left to lose.

They've still had some great tracks since mind, and incredible longevity, likely prolonged by how good they are live.

They've got two drummers who are better than almost every bands single drummer, so that helps
