Work secondment help/advice.

Hi all, I know it’s probably Google-able but I find asking on here is usually a lot more informative.

There’s a secondment situation happening at work and I’m wondering if anyone on here could answer the following questions please. It’s an internal secondment, if that helps.

1. I’ve been on secondment for almost 24 months now (four continuous periods of 6 months) and have been told that is the longest I can be on secondment because any longer than that and I would have to be given a contract for the job permanently. Is this true?

2. I have been told that I will have to end my secondment, but I have seen that there’s a 6 month secondment position being internally advertised for the job that I was doing. Can they do this or should the job have been offered to me after 24 months?

3. Once my secondment period has expired am I then free to apply for this 6 month vacancy (or another secondment in different role) or does a certain period of time have to have passed before I can apply for another one?

The office manager wants to keep me on in the role and they’re not happy that they’re losing the two years of training and experience I have gained, but we have a new GM who has come in (and caused a lot of workplace problems) and, for whatever reason, he doesn’t want to hand out any contracts.

Any help is very much appreciated, thanks.

I don't really have any experience of this but on the face of it your company look to be ripping the P out of you.

If you are in a union then I would seek their advice.

Sounds like the company don't want to pay properly for the job you have been doing for 2 years.

I know that number 1 is correct. If you are seconded for more than 23 months it becomes permanent.
Which I suppose would explain number 2, though it does seem a bit fishy.
Number 3, not sure. Though I don't see why not.

What is the situation with your pre-secondment role. Has that gone?

Thanks, Colgates_shaving_foam. Trust me, they rip the P out of a lot of things where I work, mate.

I am in a union and I will definitely be seeking advice from them. Thanks for the advice 👍🏻

Thanks, Rofesleg, I will look into it with our union rep. I might try to apply for it and see where it gets me. 👍🏻

I'm confused. If you had a role before the secondment then do you already have a permanent contract of employment with the company?

Yeah, I have a permanent contract but it’s for an area of work that I’m looking to get out of. This was an internal secondment role that I was hoping would get me out of my contracted role.

Have you checked the secondment policy?

I agree the 24th month thing in secondment is real, but if you were to stay it may just become a fixed term contract & in the process you may relinquish your right to return to your permanent employment role.
