Writing to your local MP about the Downing St parties?

I've read in the last few days about angry constituents writing to their local MP's about the Downing Street parties, have any of you done the same?

My local MP is Simon Clarke and although I'm angry I just feel like what's the point? He seems to toe the party line from one crisis to the next and I'd expect no reply/ or reply basically just playing the whole thing down.

Do you think we should be hammering our MP's with letters or emails of complaint or should we just resign ourselves to the situation? I'm not sure what to do.

Write to him and publish his reply on here. If he doesn't reply you know what type of MP you have.

You will just get the same stock reply they've already given to others.

My MP, Jacob Young, is too busy biting on Twitter replying with childish gifs to those criticising him. Every time someone mentions his silence on partygate he refers to a non-statement he gave the Northern Echo.

Just written to Ian Levy in Blyth Valley:-

'
Hi Ian,

I am writing to you as my MP to express my absolute disgust with the Prime Minister and his continued inability to tell the truth. The 'PartyGate' scandal has shown Boris Johnson as completely unfit to lead our country during these difficult times.

The position of Prime Minister should be held in the highest regard in our country and those who have the priviledge to hold it MUST be held to the high standards expected of it. Boris Johnson has failed to do so on many occassions though his current lies in regards to the 'PartyGate' scandal are a step too far.

I am calling on you as my MP to write a letter of no confidence to the 1922 committee - the anger that this has caused amongst your constituents is very real, with people unable to say farewell to loved ones as they have passed away disgusted by the actions of a 'man' who should be leading by example in his role as PM.

I shouldn't need to remind you that your majority in Blyth Valley is one of the smallest of any constituency in the UK; by supporting Boris Johnson and not calling for his resignation it is very likely to lead to the removal of many Conservative councillors at the local elections along with your removal as MP come the next General Election.

I urge you to show some consideration for the views of the people who elected you and call for his resignation without delay.'

Response i got read:-

Thank you very much indeed for your letter regarding the allegations of the breaking of Covid restrictions related to No 10 Downing Street.

I have received a large number of emails which raise very severe concerns that whilst the rest of us (including myself) had to fully comply with the rules, it appears that events were taking place at Downing Street that could have been non-compliant and certainly from what I have seen do not seem to be within the rules at the time..

I understand very well how the lockdown affected people with relatives in hospital who they couldn’t visit, even when they were approaching the end of their life, or had relatives in care homes who were often confused and bewildered as to why their nearest and dearest could not visit.

Other constituents had to cancel major family events such as weddings, and of course, as we saw from the funeral of Prince Philip, there were tough restrictions in place regarding funerals and who could attend them, and how social distancing had to be maintained.

For these reasons I absolutely understand why so many people are angry that reports emanating from Downing Street, show that drinks both in the garden and in the building were taking place, which although were in a work place involving people who worked together during the day, did not seem to some observers to be directly work related.

You will be aware that No 10 have instigated an enquiry into these led by an independent and well respected civil servant, who was not connected with any of these events, Sue Grey, and I hope that this will shed some light on the legality or otherwise of these events.

Whether these broke the letter of the law or not, I absolutely agree with you that these were against the spirit of the regulations in place and did not set a good example to the rest of us who were trying very hard to comply and keep the disease under control.

Some of these events were also attended by the Prime Minister which, of course, has shone a very strong spotlight as to his activities at this time, which will also be part of that report.

Following the report it maybe that the Metropolitan Police could take action against groups or individuals who were either organising or attending these events should they prove to have been outside the rules.

Finally, you may recall that following the trip Dominic Cummings made to County Durham almost two years ago, I was one of the first to call for his sacking, and was disappointed that the Prime Minister did not take decisive action to make it clear that the same rules apply in Downing Street or to those who work in Downing Street as to the rest of us.

I also know that when illegal events were taking place in Scarborough or Whitby, the police were issuing fines and giving people advice and I myself was actually one of those encouraging people to comply with the rules which makes the current situation even more irritating to myself.

Thank you again for getting in touch, this is a rapidly evolving situation and I am sure that over the next few weeks some fairly tough decisions will have to made.

Yours sincerely

Shame his secretary can’t spell the civil servants name correctly - I suspect the same one size fits all email will get sent to anyone else in his constituency

Write to your MP, the response you get might be a party line toed generic piece of vanilla, but the one thing about the majority of politicians is their want for self preservation and if they feel the tipping point for their own future is negatively balanced they will change their tune, keeping the pressure on and not accepting these responses is one small way that could influence change.

I mean it's ridiculous that they should need this to condemn actions that are plainly wrong and I have respect for those Conservative MP's who have stood up and been counted in their criticism of Johnson and whilst I agree it's better for the Labour Party for this farce to run and run, the longer it continues the worse it gets for the country and surely our primary focus must be on getting rid of a person who is unfit for the role of PM over any preference of who wins the next election.

Yes the more they get the more they will be sick of it. Asked mine to write a letter to 1922 committee got a stock response so went on a massive tirade about how the way no 10 spokespeople dismissals and excuses from no 10 were insulting the intelligence of the public

‘3 more revelations today. Ultimately the longer your boss stays in the pm chair, the more damage it does to you as MP’s. If you want a remain as Redcar’s mp, I would suggest publicly supporting removing him from office.

Boris Johnson won’t remove himself. His ego won’t let him.

My confidence is politics is at an all time low.

No 10 briefing are insulting peoples intelligence. Reports or broken swings, suitcases of wine, and dj/dancing in the basement and number 10 states ‘it was a farewell speech’ it’s an insult to the people who have made sacrifices

Where is the accountability?

Are we up to 14 parties/gatherings now. A disgrace.

Stand up against the injustices of no 10. Don’t let it tarnish you.’

Yeah thats a good point, I think that could be the tipping point for MP's if they feel at risk themselves.

This is the "non" reply that I received from my MP.
"Thank you for your email and I note what you say about parties at Downing Street taking place during the lockdown period.

I was not present at any of these events and have no direct knowledge of what did and did not occur but I note that a civil service enquiry is still underway into these matters and I think that it is appropriate to await the outcome of this.

I have certainly noted your views and thank you for getting in touch."

The more letters that are sent, the better as far as I am concerned. Johnson has done everything he can to avoid scrutiny and his inability/unwillingness to tell the truth should concern us all. His MPs need to know the depth and strength of the disgust and contempt many of us feel.

MPs are busy at the best of times and some are good constituency MPs, I've found. Why flood them with emails when somebody has an urgent problem they need help with. It's not China, you can vote in elections.

Also, not all of our elected representatives can be held to account; my local MP doesn't vote and can't get involved in things like this.

Those MPs who do and can need to know how their constituents feel.

If you don't let them know how you feel they assume you are happy with their work. You need to let them know this is costing them votes and support

If the Tories get their way and the electorate turn a blind eye then it soon will be, and your vote will be worthless.

I feel like it is pointless with him.

Although, as much as he is a Johnson supporter, he is also in the Rishi camp, so it's a little awkward for him right now I imagine.
