Xbox or PS5

Standard

Digital means you can never pick up a cheap used game or sell anything on

Digital prices tend to be high
I got a disk PS5. Not sure it was a sound decision. In the past I would buy old games from cex. Pick up stuff for a tenner that was three or four years old.

I'm finding now that cex has a limited stock of used PS5 games. That there aren't as deep discounts on used games (partly because the ps5 isn't that old). You also sometimes miss out on dlc. I bought 2nd hand ff7r. I couldn't download the free content as this came in the form of a code that had already been used by the previous owner.

On the other side I'm finding that the ps5 online store often does sales with discounts on older games that beat anything the secondhand shops would do. Got cyberpunk for £20 a year after release. Got an old PS4 tomb raider game for a fiver.

The only reason I really use the disk drive is to play Blu-ray and DVD.

So I would recommend getting the digital version of the console. I think we're at the tipping point now where consoles are switching to digital.

PS controllers seem to last much longer than xbox controllers. Mate has gone through 3 controllers in a year.....maybe he has a massive thumb.

If he only plays games like FIFA, CoD etc. it probably doesn’t matter which console you have. If you think he will get into story based games, what a lot of people would class as “gaming”, you need a PS5. Xbox are busy buying up game developers because right now they have 1 exclusive game that is worth playing. Everything else is on PS4/5. (PS5 can play PS4 games).

Got to say I’m not really an online player, the PS exclusives really are incredible games. I’d recommend the ps5 for those games alone. As for console I have a digital one and it hasn’t really hindered me compared to when I had a disc console, the sales in the PS store are really good and change up every few weeks and has extra seasonal sales and you can pick up games for next to nothing if you are smart with it.

I'm kind of thinking his two younger brothers are likely to get their hands on the discs and nack them anyway so having digital version could be better. As long as there isn't any trade off for performance or anything I think id go that route.

No they're both the same machine under the hood, unlike the Xbox.

You also have to have the disk in the machine to play it on the disc one, so if you scratch your disk like you said you're ****ed and have to buy a new copy.

You can get cheaper games on eBay or fb and as the games get older they will be cheaper still.

If you look at the cost of any new game the digital ones are obscene often more then a physical copy

I got last of us part 2 for £50, played it for 3 weeks and sold it for £45 so it cost me a fiver to play it through.

Consoles are doing digital well but you have the option of physical and recouping cost of games by selling them on if you like, you can never do that with digital and if you ever get an account banned you lose all access. That can happen for daft stuff like doing a chargeback. The price difference isn't even that great to make it worth while and hobble yourself to picking up sale games or relying on ps+. Xbox does digital a lot better because of game pass

For digital games id just get a pc and buy games over vpn, I got cyberpunk on day 1 for £19

I say this as someone who’s been PlayStation for the last couple of generations, but if you’ve out of the game(!) for 15 years, I’d honestly recommend Xbox. I think you get a better customer experience with the perks Xbox has with game pass.

Love my PS5 though and it gets daily use.

One big down side is the ludicrously small HD though. You can expand but they never thought it through.

If the exclusive games for a particular console appeal to him then buy that console, otherwise just buy the same console most of his mates have.

Either way, both consoles are great pieces of kit.

Well yeah physical seems to work for you, but I think most of my purchases will be digital from now on. Any resale value I can get from games is minimal and I'm finding the online sales to easily match any savings from buying second hand. A gaming pc would be hugely expensive and I think PC gaming is for people a lot more tech savvy than me. As a casual gamer if I bought a ps5 again, I'd definitely get the digital version.

I have the Ps5 and the xbox series s.

The xbox game pass is fantastic value for money. Many different games are added all the time and some are even day 1 releases.

I love the saved States of games thst I've been playing and can just start playing them again at the same point instantly.

The Ps5 has some excellent games only available on thst console, the last of us part 1 and part 2 being the 2 stand outs. 2 of the greatest games I've ever played.

However, it sounds like your son wants to focus on fifa.

The cost of the Ps5 is massive now. £480 direct from Sony, or £600 from shops.

The xbox series s can be found for £200. It has slightly reduced performance to the xbox series x but it still has most of the features.

I'd say go for the xbox series s, see how he gets on and if it becomes a staple to his gaming habits, then upgrade to the xbox series x later.

I’ve played the last of us 2 over 6 times on each difficulty, how you could sell such a masterpiece! Greatest game ever for me!

Cos I know I'll get it again on pc when it comes out there and it'll look better. or game pass later on to replay, I play that many games I don't have the time to play one 6 times over, so rather get the value back and play a new one.

It's one of my favourite game series of all time also but I don't really enjoy replaying games over and over unless they're significantly different e.g mass effect paragon vs renegade playthroughs

I'm a xbox fan boy... basically because I got the XBOX ALL ACCESS - XBOX SERIES X

Which is pay £28.99/month for 2 years, included is game pass ultimate. All I could get at the time due to limited supplies. I've played loads of indie games I wouldn't have ever bought. Love it

Got a PS4, assumed at some point I would upgrade to PS5, but happened to see one up close at the weekend - it's absolutely massive. Now as it happens, I saw it in a design museum so wondered if it might have been some sort of early concept prototype or something. Anyone who's got one able to clarify - is it really as humungous in comparison to the PS4?

For reference this is the PS4 version I've got:

They are big. Components are getting bigger and you need heat dissipation for the cpu and gpu, something which the PS4 and ps4 pro struggled with. Even with the larger size if I close the av cabinet when I open the door later it's mega hot in there

Yeah, that's the one I saw on the right. May need some rejigging of space before I take that particular plunge...

I own neither. I am mulling over getting one. So probably not an 'expert' to give advice.

I would probably go Xbox purley because the Game pass is superb. You even get big name first day releases on it.

Also looking around the xbox seems easier to purchase. I can pop down my local argos and collect today. I've not seen the PS5 remotely as available.

The other thing to add to this is that Xbox have repeatedly said that the same games will be available on both the S and X so there will be no X exclusives.

If you have fibre internet too the lack of CD drive shouldn't make too much difference. hard drive space may be an issue at some point but i am sure you can manage this.

with game pass you find yourself playing things you wouldn't normally as they are "free". plus you get EA play included so you can play last years FIFA for free if he is not bothered about having up to date squads etc.
