YouGov Poll - 33 Point lead!

Normally polling results like that come from North Korea and Belarus, it's incredible how unpopular Truss is, I think Putin would fancy his chances in a popularity contest against her.

She's the Pinocchio politician, a wooden liar who once her strings were cut has got into ever deepening trouble with no real strategy for getting out beyond plowing on regardless.

Every time she speaks her popularity falls, she's put her foot in her mouth more than a toe fetishist.

The next few days will be interesting to see how the press responds to these statistics, they will either go all out attack on Truss or Labour, if it's the former then she's toast, if it's the latter then expect the very worst of 'journalism'.

21% is also extraordinary.

I always thought that it just couldn't drop below about 32% because people simply identify too strongly with a 'brand' that goes to their inner core beliefs and world view.

Once people shift for a first time, they are much more ready to shift a second.

I mean, they've absolutely screwed the country up for a long time to the point it will never be what it was again, but the silver lining could be that the best way to defeat the far right for a long time is to have simply let them enact their stupid venal policies, which is what these last six years have all been. Such a lot of parallels with the 1930's. Sea change coming I hope, thankfully not requiring a brutal world war this time.

If that round of interviews this morning hasn’t caused further loss of support I would be shocked……great from Radio Leeds ‘PM where’ve you been?’
That was such an easy question for Truss to answer though.

"I've been working hard with cabinet colleagues, trusted experts and business leaders to find ways to tackle the impact on global markets from the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine, making Britain stronger than ever and building an economy that helps us all. The British people don't want their PM to be parading themselves in front of the TV cameras everyday spouting soundbites; they want me working hard for them, and that's what I'm doing".

She had an open goal, and she turned around and lobbed her own keeper instead. That just shows how out of her depth she is.

I think there's a real chance the 1922 will look to alter both the "one year minimum" clause and try to remove selection rights from party members.

If you're a Tory MP surely its the only chance you've got? The experiment is laid bare and it has absolutely nothing to do with political parties.

This is where Starmer is so superior to Corbyn (in this situation), forget the "Tory with a Red Rosette" nonsense he has been so careful to give the press absolutely no ammunition. Jezza for all his great policies and his honesty and endeavour to be a force for good was such an easy target. They tried so hard tp nail Starmer with "Beergate" and managed a spectacular own goal by showing the venal mess that Johnson was in refusing to countenance resigning if he was found to have broken the law. So Starmer is a VERY hard target to hit. Truss is absolutely woeful and not even a choice among MPs but hoisted upon the Parliamentary Party by the Blue Rinse xenophobes. If she survives to the end of October it'll be because they don't want to appear "weak" yet manifestly demonstrating it.

Why won't we get a vote of no confidence? Not been condescending, genuinely don't know why.

The Conservatives have a big majority, so they would have to vote against themselves. The motion requires a two thirds majority.

While that is not impossible, it would lead to a General Election and most of them would be turfed out of their cushy jobs and maybe the future cushy numbers they lead to.

Edit: I’d forgotten the FTPA had been repealed. So we are back to the old system where it is down to the Sovereign at the behest of the PM.

It used to be the convention that if the House voted down a budget, that meant the government couldn’t function and I think de facto meant the PM couldn’t command the support of Parliament. If there was someone else who could, then a General Election was not necessary, but almost almost always there would not be any single other individual that could. Churchill in 1940, Brown following Blair and Lloyd George are probably the only examples of politicians of such commanding presence that they would be able to step in as PM overnight without a leadership or general election.

Those point leads are a bit misleading I have had it pointed out to me in a discussion on Twitter…

one of those posted here shows that they strip out the undecided/don’t knows and recalculate the %age then…

if there’s a sizeable portion of don’t knows in the initial poll amount it could affect that lead quite significantly…

labour won’t get a massive majority even if the vote was tomorrow but they will win convincingly…

It's also not as if that question wasn't foreseeable either. She shouldn't need strategists or advisors to prepare her for that one, if she was half competent she'd have known it was coming herself.

Johnson wasn't much better, but the Boris bluster let him ride it out a bit more effectively.

If the media wasn't so heavily on their side they'd be even more unpopular than they are. The incompetence, even at basic politics, is staggering, but a compliant media let them off the hook time and again.
